They were right - creating your own product is the way to go

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, because I've still got a long way to go if I want to make the process even easier for my affiliates, but for nearly a year I've been trying my hand at affiliate marketing. I've been doing OK, but I didn't really like the work.

It is a long story, but after being disappointed with several of the products in a certain niche, I decided to create my own...hoping to make it the best product in that niche.

I realized that one of the best ways to create a product is find the market leader, buy it, then make a better product. Although sales aren't spectacular, they are good enough to have made creating the product worth my while.

The best part is that I've set up a Google alert for my product, and every day I get several new alerts that link to sites built to promote my product. As an affiliate, there is no way to keep up with this kind of new growth, but as a creator/producer, you get to watch everyone else to the dirty work.

I'm very thankful for my affiliates, but I can say with 100% certainty that creating products is my new way ahead. I happen to like doing it on my own, some might not. Still, for all of you that are trying to find a way to make money online, consider finding a product in a niche that interests you and then making something better. Once you've created the product, then you can move on to the next. It really is a beautiful thing.

Google alerts is a tremendous boon not only to learn about product updates but also to track when you're mentioned online, your site is commented, your Twitter ID pops up in other social forums, etc. It's a great resource.

      Enjoy,

I've just published my second product, and can wholeheartedly agree. My own marketing efforts have still produced more sales that my number one affiliate, but after a month of working on it, I am ready to move on to the next product. I'll let the affiliates do the work now.

I have to say you are so right. Often we are taught to just jump on board as an affiliate but you are no better than a spectaror at a concert. Wouldn't it be great if you could be that person on stage people are paying to see?! No disrespect intended to those out there who do affilate stuff only and are very good at it. I am simply talking about a mindset and point of view. I learn't after trying the clickbank thing and then lurking here on WF that the people that really build their own brand and instead of following someone elses' do a lot better. It's like the whole teaching someone how to fish instead of taking them to the market to buy some fish. Yes its hard work but at least you know how to do it when you are on your own.

I'd say that selling your own product is the way to go. Creating it on your own is both time consuming and risky. You never know if something you slaved over for weeks or months will ever sell.

      Hi James.. how are you?

Although my primary income is from affiliate marketing and other people's products.. I think it's fair to say that if you have been selling a product as an affiliate, creating your own that is an improvement on the one you were promoting is a great way to go and removes a lot of the risk (I have done this myself).

Time consuming, maybe, but definitely worth it, IMHO.

Exactly, I don't think there is much risk at all if you know what you are doing and if I make my own product I can attest to the quality of work and the content inside.

I hope you're right. I'm 96.5% finished with what will be my first eBook to be sold. I hope it will do better than what I've been able to make as an affiliate for other products.

And, if it doesn't sell, you can always recycle the content for use as blog posts or creating a website or whatnot.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Creating your own product is definitely the way to go if you want to leverage the efforts of others. However, product development is far from easy. There are many things to cover when creating your own product and getting it ready to sell. I know this first hand as I am just wrapping up the development of my first product.

And while I am not seeing any return right this minute and haven't for some time now, I am confident my hard work will pay off when all is said and done.

All very good but we still need affiliates so maybe a kinder, more supportive way of referring to what they do, other than "dirty work" would be, like you suggest, taking something that works and making it better.

Well, you can call it whatever you want...it just isn't stuff that I like to do day in and day out. I'd rather outsource it, but I'm too cheap lol.

I would really be interested to know how much you have made from your product. I personally think it just depends on your business model. Walmart afterall does not actually make anything.

Yes leveraging the efforts of your affiliate is good. But 95% of them will do nothing for you. As an affiliate marketer, you can leverage the efforts of many people by clever outsourcing and building networks of sites. Just as you copy others products, others will also copy and improve on your product.

I really think it depends on your own personal abilities and knowledge.

I make about 3-5 sales per day, depending on the day. You are right, it does depend on your skills and I am NOT knocking affiliate marketing...I'm just saying creating your own product, if you have the skill and knowledge to do so, can pay off with much less effort.

I like affiliate marketing and outsourcing articles and content, etc. But I also don't like creating real estate for someone else's product. If they yank it, I'm screwed.

I'd rather earn 100% than 50% if I can (I still promote my own products). I also think it is important to arm your affiliates with tools...banners, emails, covers, pictures, videos, etc.

You are right, many won't do much, but the ones that do really help tip the earnings in your favor.

Hallaleju! This is what I've dedicated my time, energy and effort doing for the last 7+ years - it's not only making me a full-time income, but has helped hundreds of others getting their best product out the door and earning some dough.

        Couple of quick points...

        1. There are ways of entering a market quickly with affiliate products to "Test" the commercial viability, the best "angle" that sells the best, copywriting messages that hit the mark, build a list in advance and create some momentum in a market - then hit it with your own product that does a better job of positioning and profit margin than your competition. You are using "inside" knowledge of the market from your affiliate marketing to learn how to lower the risk on your own product development. Works very well.

        2. Once you have a presence in your market with a product or two, you will be amazed how much better you can do with affiliate marketing - simply because the added credibility of having a top product gains you trust, then people will want to buy from you.

Great to see you are on the right path!

Right now, my intro price is 47 with a $10 discount if you Tweet the landing page. So the commission is only 18-23 bucks. The price will increase shortly now that the first 50 are nearly gone, but I've had nearly a dozen affiliates make a sale in the first 2 weeks. I wish CB let you create different commissions...I'd like to change it for JV partners.

        Hi Nathan,

Congrats on getting your own product. I agree - it makes little sense for CB to limit you to one commission rate for all the products you offer in your account.

The only way around it, apparently, is to open a second CB account (something I'm about to do so I can give JVs a higher commission). Once you have paid your $47 (whatever) for your first account, the second one is like half price. It's just another "trick" for CB to make more money on its current users.

        Good luck with your product.

Now that the front end is doing well, I'm working on an upsell and a backend membership. This is the part I wasn't really prepared for that is a bit trickier to implement. This is the type of course I could benefit from now. Maybe even someone that did consulting.

I agree, creating your own products is the way forward. You can potentially profit from many more angles than you can with promoting other peoples products.

I am developing a new product / system. This may take a couple of months or so. I don't currently sell products through clickbank or anything similar. As a vendor, is it quite a good portal to sell through? Can you easily track who is promoting your products? And is it easy to implement?

Regarding commissions, I know some people offer 75 - 85% commission. With downloadable products I can understand that but if it's for membership then there is support etc which you need to factor in. There is no point in making a few dollars if you have to be available to members for a lifetime commitment.
