Hi Warriors,

I have always marketed to mainly men, and now I want to get some women too! What I am asking is do people have a gender specific strategy applied to their campaigns? I have always assumed I am marketing to mainly men and my marketing is appropriately aimed at men.

What I am now wondering is am I cutting half of the market, is it wise to market to your main customer base or should you be focusing on the difference in gender?

Regards, Phil

I think this really depends on what product you're pushing. And what topic you're talking about.

If you're talking about website design, I can tell you that colors can play a role.

If you're talking about blogs, women like to read things that they can connect emotionally with.

Men mostly go for facts and figures. Numbers. Points. They tend to scan websites fast and if they don't get what they want, they move on.

As a woman I can make a few comments ....

It's true that men and women think differently but they can each have the same issues. I think using Quantcast to get demograpics and similar websites can help a lot in creating a profile of who you're marketing to.

Granted women have different perceptions of the world but many of them are analytical. Making broad statements that men are this way and women this way is just too simplified. I don't know what you are selling or offering but you need to do a profile on who your customer is and then build your marketing and sales letter around that profile.

If you're not using Quantcast then check it out and see if it can give you any ideas. Put in a domain that matches your niche and check out demographics, similar sites that are visited etc.

      I hope this helps.

I had a marketing teacher in college who used to mention constantly that women bought twice as much stuff online as men. I don't know where he got that info, or if it's still even true, but ever since then, I've target what I would call "women specific" niches, like yoga, parenting, and things that I think are highly targeted towards women.

I doubt that there's even one good way to market towards women or towards men while still maintaining a mix of both. The way you write your articles or phrase your product towards either gender is going to be the real telling factor of who you're going to get, as men and women rarely read the same magazines unless they're topic-specific rather than gender-specific.

I think targeting the right products and niches is the only way to go about it.

If you market to everyone, you in a sense market to no-one. You have to really segment your market to get optimal results. The greater the targeting, the greater the results. Sure women and men have common problems, but they go about solving them in completely different ways.

    Case in point:

My girlfriend once came to me with a problem she had. I naturally tried to furnish her with a solution. This drove her mad! She ranted that she doesn't want a solution to her problem, she merely wants to be listened to.

The fact is men and women whilst belonging to the same species, are completely different in their makeup (That's a moot point though, so thread carefully!).

I believe you can market the same car to a man and a woman. Your success however, will depend on 'how' you market that car.

So, the first thing you want to do is build a market profile. Structure your offer around that profile and sell loads of stuff! At least that's the theory.

    Hope that helps

Vic Schwab takes a stab at this subject in his book
"How To Write A Good Advertsement" (Ch. 9)

He basically says that men are more future thinking
and women are more shorter-term thinking.

So men tend to think about his job, rate of advancement,
educational advantages for his children, life insurance etc.

Women think more about dates, courtship, marriage, motherhood,
daily problems with children, the relation of events to her
    social standing, etc.

Of course these are broad generalizations and what people
SAY they care about and what they REALLY care about
can be night and day apart. So don't expect many
people to admit these things about THEMSELVES, just about
the 'man in general' and the 'woman in general'.

It hard to take sides on this issue nowadays, they have what they call woman empowerment and honestly speaking women are thinking more like men now. Its true that women are stringy and they tend to connect with products that appeal to their emotions but hey they know their budget they know how to spend their money, they are not all emotions now, I think they are even better at weighing things. Men on the other side has not evolved much when it comes to decision making, we still tend to look at figures and facts which makes women on my opinion the better decision maker, they take into consideration facts and figures and mixed it with their emotions or instincts or whatever they call it and ta-da they got the right mix. Well most of the time..NOT all the time lol..

    Two hints (out of 12):

    Women like to share

    and

Women are stingy (depending on the niche) when it comes to online purchases, so don't expect to get away with charging high.

In certain categories, women believe everything should be free.

Oh, and women love sex tips.

    A lot.

    More than men, actually.

How to please men and how men can better pleasure them.

They'll never admit it conversationally unless they feel completely comfortable around you, but they LOVE sex and sex advice.

You should know, Phil that 80 percent of the buying market is... Women! Not men. If you're looking to change your marketing strategy to target the female consumer the first thing you should do is start marketing products that attract women.

Next, if you have a website, be sure to hire a female copywriter to help you write copy that gets into the mind of the female consumer. It's really quite simple and if done correctly, can be extremely rewarding.

When a man needs something, he knows he has to buy it and will look for a place that sells what he needs to buy. Then he goes and buys it.

When a woman needs something, she will look where she can get it free. If she can't find it free she will still look to get it free somehow. If she can't find for free it at all, she either buys it or she doesn't.

Here is how men shop in the offline world - they walk into the store, go to the department, find what they need, pay and leave.

Here is how women operate in real life - they go shopping (sometimes for hours), they try things on, then they talk to their girlfriends, then they ask for second, third, fourth opinion. She finally decides to buy something. She gets excited about her new purchase till her girlfriend says it doesn't look good on her or it's too expensive. In which case the woman goes back and returns her purchase.

    Women shop. Men buy.

    How to get women?

    Well,
Gary Halbert wrote the world's most famous sales letter.

The Warrior Forum newbie approach would be:

Make ten blogs, each about something interesting to women.
    Fluffycutebunnies.com
    Romancenovels.com
    Bestfootballplayingstuds.com
    and so on.

Pay no more than $1.50 for 20 articles for each blog.
Set up 50 Squidoo pages to drive traffic to the blogs.
Use a carefully optimized PPC/SEO split test to drive traffic to the Squidoo pages and blogs.

The blogs then refer to squeeze pages to get the women on your mailing list.

Soon you'll have over 10,000 women on your mailing list.
Give them a five part autoresponder about cute fluffy bunnies.
Then put them into your monthly newsletter about romance novels and football studs.
Every eighth newsletter, put in a pitch about how hard it is to find a great guy and link to PhilIsAGreatGuy.com.

If only 1/10 of 1% respond to your offer...

    Regards,
    Allen

P.S. The next step is to complain that after spending $4,376.25 to buy IM ebooks telling you how to find women online, you're still watching TV alone.

    Hi,

Thanks for your comments, now I feel more confused that ever, lol. I appreciate the comments about women wanting something for free, women are more cautious with their purchases, and from this thread it seems you have to seduce a women into buying something, they have to emotionally react to the product. I understand men far more than I understand women, I will see how I get on and report back with any tips I can share.
