In the IM Niche? Here's Something to Think About

I just had this conversation today with a friend and he thought it was very eye opening. I was actually surprised by his response because this is so obvious, but I'll share it here anyway.

From Broad to Narrow:

Make Money
Make Money On Your Own (Without a Job)
Make Money At Home
Make Money Online
Make Money as an Internet Marketer

I can't think of another instance where you can go from broad to narrow and the competition actually increases. For example, it's a lot easier to sell to "Make Money at Home," than it is to sell to "Make Money in IM."

Most people don't even know what IM is and sure as heck aren't interested in learning to be an "Internet Marketer," but everyone would like to make extra money from home.

There are still many people out there who don't even know what "Traffic" is but they would love to know more about "Website Promotion."

You guys fight over this IM market. I've got bigger fish to fry.

Ron, I've actually been in the broader markets for years now, which is part of
the reason (I think) that I have an easier time than most even though I
don't spend a lot of money on promotion.

As a matter of fact, my very first product, which still sells fairly well several
years later, targets people who are looking to make money from home and
goes over quite a few ways to do that.

It wouldn't appeal to somebody who's specifically looking to be an "Internet
Marketer" per say, but it sure appeals to people who are just looking to
    supplement their income from home.

As a matter of fact, here are the main keywords that I use to promote it.

    home based business tips
    starting a home business
    home business articles
    home base business
    make easy money online
    make money online for free
    make money free online
    make money online free

I focus on these mostly because I find that they get me the best results
with my articles. I don't know how well they'd work with pay per click, but
    with articles, they kick ass.

Good post Ron. Thanks for pointing that out to those having trouble
breaking into the tighter niches of making money.

      Ron,

      Great post for starters.

Here's the idea I think behind your post.

It's all about knowing the market that you're going into. Most people who just got laid off know little about internet marketing. Thus, focusing on finding "new at internet marketing" type stuff is a waste of time and probably not the most effective.

I think it's wise to point out this out, which you did in your original post. People always espouse the idea that you need to drill down deep into a niche to find the profitable stuff. This might be true sometimes but not always. You've provided a situation where that is actually detrimental to drill down.

Great pointing this out because there's a lot of information out there that states otherwise.

      Cheers,

      Brad Spencer

The other thing to consider is, products that appeal to the broad market will also appeal to the narrow market in most cases.

For example: a "Split Testing Secrets" course may not appeal to the Make Money market, but a "Here's How I Make $50k a Month in My Pajamas" course could possibly appeal to both the Make Money at Home and the Internet Marketing crowd.

If you can take your specialized product and somehow make it also appeal to a broader market, you'd have the potential to make many more sales.

This is just something I was thinking about. It may not apply in all instances.
