Don't use Wordpress Ver 3.5

The latest version of WP is full of bugs. Don't use it.

I'm not going to list the bugs but it's caused havoc with some of my sites and I'm having to back pedal to Ver. 3.4

Heys, I'm a Warriortheme user too! I straightaway used Wordpress 3.5 when I started using this theme, and yes it's been very buggy. A lot of customization options aren't working in particular.

Warriortheme support team told me their head programmer is back on Jan 4, but I have yet to hear an update from them since then... Still waiting for them to reply me.

I'm considering whether I should downgrade wordpress.

I stupidly updated my site up to WP 3.5 a couple of days ago and BOY did that screw me over....

Spent a couple of hours rolling the site back to Version 3.4 as a result.

Those of you on a Hostgator plan might want to check if you have auto updates on for your hosting plan....one of my clients had signed up to automatic wordpress updates when he installed his blog and it automatically installed V3.5.

Needless to say that he had to roll that back to 3.4.... but check because your sites may be auto updating to 3.5 as you read this....

Some newer themes will work fine with the latest WordPress update but a lot of older themes will not, and it will create total havoc on your website. I really hope that WP finds a way to fix this since so many people are being affected.

It messed up one of my blogs so badly, I ended up bandaging it and starting over, no one could ever figure out what the issue was other than the upgrade. Removing all the plug ins did not solve the issue.

I can't say I've had any problems running the new ver of WordPress on one of my blogs but I can definitely say it's been slow.

I have just moved the site over to a different server though so I put it down to that but I did expect the new server to be quite a bit faster.

    This is a worry.

I had the same problem. Disabling some apps and even reinstalling some finally helped getting speed back.. not sure what exactly helped in the end...

However I still feel it is indeed slower.. I've been doing debug with some plugin and it seems it is calling 'gettext' function which is a slow function the weird thing is that that blog is not being translated at all just pure English everything and in my believe (haven't looked into it deeply) that function should only be used for translating.. however perhaps they are now also using it for just straight up retrieving texts in English language..

Yes, problems are theme and plugin dependent.

I had to downgrade my site to wordpress 3.4, its not that hard, for anyone wanting to downgrade due to bugs, I think I used this tutorial: (it was a few days ago)

Wordpress Problems: How To Downgrade Wordpress 3.5

Basically you need to delete every wordpress file apart from the wp-content file, then replace the deleted files with the wp 3.4 files.

      Yes.

I really wasn't that complicated - only had 6 plugins installed - and still had issues.

Two plugins I thought were not working were actually fine after I got rid of a different one. I spent hours today going nuts - you don't want to know.

Anyway, those of you choosing to peddle backward - I wish you luck.

The main wordpress install will be going forward - not backward on this one.

I have a feeling this picture is going to get really ugly for some people in the next few months who have become reliant on free or unsupported plugins and themes.

I can't even imagine those who have like 20 different plugins installed, lol

Oh - and don't think you can just disable the plugins. You have to actually remove them completely to get the ones that are compliant working again.

All it takes is just ONE bad plugin to screw up your good plugins and mess up the functions within this new version such as trying to insert links or updates posts.

My recommendation? Prepare now to upgrade - because you know at some point the old version will become vulnerable.

Set up a test site, examine your plugins one by one, mix and match them up, and you'll eventually spot the bad eggs.

This is part of why I think Wordpress sucks. Wouldn't it be easier to just have some part of a website in php so that it could be dynamic and you could post to a blog, but the rest of the site could simply be done in good old fashioned HTML? Wouldn't that be better than having a whole site built on Wordpress?

Is there any paid alternative that doesn't come with the constant updates and BS that opensource options like Wordpress come with? Does anyone know of something better?

After creating a "Clone" site I upgrade to WP 3.5 and did not have any problems, so I upgraded the "Live" site and boom.. lots of very peculiar problems.

Side note: The sites are on two different hosts (servers). The Live Site is on Host A and the Cloned Site on Host B. There are no major differences in settings between the two servers, so I was a little stumped from the start and I am a Server Admin by profession.

    My problems were:

    1) I was able to create pages and posts, but the destination URL returned error 404.

This is usually because of what is called a conflict with the: rewrite rule. This can be server side or wordpress side.

    2) One of the third party applications, CBengine, locked down the admin widgets panel.

CBengine problem that should be fixed soon with an update, but I found a work-around.

    [My Solution]
This may not be the cause of everyone's issues, but my own issue pertained to my file: .htaccess

So we are on the same base.. the .htaccess file is created by WP. The file has a set of rules and conditions that literally makes WP work.

What happened was my .htaccess file on the Clone Site was not modified by the WP 3.5 upgrade because I run a custom .htaccess file that is strengthen with code wherein nothing can modify it except for me doing it manually. Hence, the Clone Site worked perfectly.

Before upgrading the Live Site I did in fact remove my custom .htaccess file and replaced it with the default WP .htaccess file. Long story short.. this is part of the process when creating a custom .htaccess file.

In any event I got it all working perfectly in under 30 minutes.

What may help some of you that have issues and save you some time is to rewrite your .htaccess file with a new copy. Rewrite it at the server level, either with Cpane File Manager or an FTP Client that allows you to edit files on the server.

If you still have problems with pages/posts/404 simply mark out the Rewrite Base like this:
    Code:
    #RewriteBase /
After marking out the Rewrite, check to see if you can create pages, posts without error. If yes, then the .htaccess file is... Corrupt! Simply create a new one (Server Side as explained above) and if that does not work.. contact your host and ask them to do it for you from their side.

    Jeffery 100% :-)

I am a webmaster for atleast 6 years and it is my recommendation to everyone to backup their site before they upgrade.

And it is obvious that you have to and should upgrade to the new version of WordPress as soon as possible. If your theme is not compatible then ask the theme developer or take some help.

It is my saying too- do not blame WP for incompatible theme or plugin. try to minimise the use of plugin if you can.

Each time a new version of Wordpress comes out, here is what I do.

    1. Wait 2 to 3 weeks.
    2. Write down the theme and plugins I use on a site.
    3. Visit forums for the theme and each plugin and see if anyone had a problem.
    4. If no problems found with the theme or plugins I go to the next step.
    5. Backup the site.
    6. Install the new version of Wordpress.
    7. Update the theme and plugins if needed.
    8. Start using the site as usual.

It's been close to a month since I upgraded and I still haven't found a way to get one of my sites to come up right away.... it takes about 45 seconds to do so. I have no plug ins, I changed themes, and it is still a mess.

I was hoping for a 3.5.1 upgrade soon but there hasn't even been word of such thing.

Again, some of my sites work fine while others are a complete mess. I know the issues pertain to themes, yet I never had such a serious problem with themes and wordpress until now.

I am currently looking to see what other options there are besides WP.

I updated as soon as the update was out, running 3 domains, 2 different themes, and 3 plugins on each site and no issues.

It's all the non-WP addons that have not been upgraded themselves to be compatible with the new version that's the problem, not WP.

If you go browse the themes on offer, most STILL say they haven't been tested with 3.5

We have some sites in 3.4, and I just started a new one in 3.5; so I can't comment on the upgrade problems.

But, just a moment ago, I couldn't get the site to load, or only to load very slowly. It turned out that my host is having server problems.

And so it occurred to me that if you have installed WP through your host, that you might check with them.

If you are serious about your WP site / business - a back up test site should be a "must"!
The best advice so far in this thread.

FACT: Any update to any software has the potential to break your existing work reliant on that software. WordPress is no different.

Actually as WordPress is never used "out of the box" then the infinite variations of plugins, themes customization and content means that is probably impossible to update it and all WordPress sites stay unaffected.

In practice the vast majority will have no problems but a minority will have problems.

You have to assume you will be one of teh minority.

      1. Ensure you have a full backup. Have a fall back option if all else fails.
      2. Have at least one test site with all your plugins installed (more if you have a lot of sites or a lot of different configurations). Update your test sites first to find any obvious issues.

You may be saying more about the theme than about WordPress. WordPress cannot possibly take into account every nuance of every theme when improving the core software. It is up to the theme and plugins developers to keep up, not for WordPress to limit it's development.

All WordPress updates are available as betas before they are released and that is an opportunity for developers to test there software with the new versions before updates are released.

Of course nothing is 100% guaranteed hence the advice above.

I can't agree that "WordPress sucks". Millions of people have great experiences with WordPress. Many make their entire living from it in one way or another. It is probably the simplest way to get a professional looking, unique website up and running for those that have little or no experience. It is sophisticated and versatile enough to suite almost all purposes from a simple blogging platform to membership sites, to, well pretty much anything using a CMS.

You also hit the nail on the head. It's open source, so it's free. It gets constant updates because it is continually developed and supported.

If you want a lot of static content on your website then there are loads of Web editor type software around Dreamweaver or Xsite Pro for example. Create your main pages with that and use WordPress just for the blog posts.

Or a quick Google search for "simple blog posting php scripts" seems to return a lot of options.

I find it interesting people automatically upgrade their Wordpress to the latest edition knowing that there will still be bugs in it. I wait at least 2-3 months before upgrading, so that the majority of release bugs are removed.

I learned this from using Microsoft Windows ... every time they release software its full of bugs and takes a year before the major ones are removed. I feel sorry for those who are already upgrading to Windows 8 ... when I only just upgraded to Windows 7 lol...
