Use current website or build a new one?

Greetings to all from the newest member of the forum!

I've been lurking for a few days now and have been very impressed by the level of participation and the advice offered here. I very much look forward to using this site to its fullest and hopefully at some point, giving back.

I own a business which of course has a website. Inspired by some of the ideas here, i've developed a plan to expand on my current business. My new plan definitely dovetails with the current offering, but could far outstrip it in sales. My question: Is it better to lump the new business in with the current website, or would it be better to create a separate business/website that would be more targeted to new plan.

The current website would benefit from the new traffic, but would the new site be hampered by not exactly fitting into the current site.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Terry

    Hi Terry,

Is your new website in a completely different niche?

If so, then I would suggest starting a new website as to not confuse your potential customers.

If it is in the same niche, then you should probably try and blend it in with your old site. As long as it won't be confusing for your customers, or potentially hurtful for your current sales.

Build a new site and keep it as relevant as possible. The more relevant you are the better you will do.

All depends, how related is the new content to your current site? For example, if you have a website about gardening and you want to add content about cars then a new website would be better. If you have a website about gardening and your new content is how to grow flowers in your garden then the current one would be fine.

The new website is in the same niche, but with a different approach/solution.

      Thanks!

If it is a new solution .. you will lose credibility with one crowd or the other if it is on the same website .. or at least I would think so.

I wouldn't put two solutions for a list building problem on the same site if I was selling both solutions.

My current website supports my local B&M store. The new website would target the US & international market. The product would be delivered in a different format.

Thanks for the quick and thoughtful responses!

From what I understand, sounds like a new site will do much better. If it is going to take a ton of time, and you think you can make money with the old site, then stay with that one. It's all about time, do what you can to make money first.

I've decided to go with a new webiste. I can market it in a more focused way. I'll also include the current site to some degree. Working with both may allow me to test various tactics.

      Thanks again!
