500th Post: How I Got Involved in Internet Marketing

Hi Everyone,

This is my 500th post, how cool!

I wanted to share a bit about why I got involved in internet marketing. I am actually a licensed therapist and have my own practice in my hometown. When I first opened a few years ago, the competition was brutal. There are a few "big" counseling places and not much room for a new guy. Getting clients was really hard.

I paid $400 to run an ad in the paper and got 0 calls. Nada! Zip!

I was pretty much screwed. I wasn't going to move to another town, and yet I only had access to people in MY town. So then it occurred to me....

Revelation 1

Online therapy!

Suddenly, the market got a heck of a lot bigger. (yeah, online therapy sounded weird to me first too. how can you do therapy if you aren't face to face? Actually it worked out really well, there are actually a lot of situations where online therapy is a really good solution for people, but that's getting away from the point of this thread)

I had the ability to market myself to the WHOLE WORLD, rather then just my little old town. And armed with a bit of internet marketing knowledge, I was pulling in more leads then "the big boys"

The problem however, was that no matter what I could only work so many hours a day and stay married to my wife, lol. I realized that I had hit a wall. I thought about getting therapists under me, but I was concerned about liability, and felt it would become too much of a hassle. So what was I to do?

Revelation 2

Affiliate Marketing

The first time I heard about affiliate marketing through places like clickbank, I nearly fell out of my chair. I fully expected to earn 10% at the most from selling products. There are so many products out there that give you a 50% to 75% commission! How crazy is that!?!

Suddenly I was in a position where I could make the same amount from one sale of a product that I could from meeting with a client for an hour. Except I didn't have to meet with someone for an hour.

How much money I could earn was only limited by how many products I could sell. AND I could sell to the WHOLE WORLD, not just my little old town.

And THAT is the magic of affiliate marketing. That is why I am addicted. That is why I've made 500 posts, cause I'm hooked

Congratulations, Matt! This is a fun story. I'm glad you made it here and are working steadily towards online marketing success. Isn't it kind of funny, in a way, that you had to go through all the schooling and such, first, before you got here?

You should check out Online Psychic Readings & Relationship Advice by Phone | Keen.com -- you seem to have a serious advantage over all those who make big money there.

Best wishes! See you at post 1000!

Yes, internet marketing can be also a way for relaxation because you can work while listening to music and it is very helpful. Some people do research about therapy online so it is very competitive. And great for you to achieve that.

    Hey guys,

Eric, yes I actually use to work for kasamba for a bit (similar to keen in that they offered immediate help like this). It was okay but there were a lot of frauds on there. People lying about their credentials, people giving "fake" readings, all kinds of stuff like that. I thought about setting up a site like that but was just so hesitant because of all the legalities involved. In the mental health field you really have to be careful with liability. Internet marketing is a lot less to worry about, lol. I do still do some counseling and really enjoy it, but I think I like IM better.

Malfumos, yes I do find certain elements of internet marketing to be very relaxing. It's kind of a weird thing, and not something someone out of IM would understand!
