I am interested in starting a blog. I'm not sure where to begin. I don't know if I should go directly with Wordpress or add wordpress to my website. I am not extremely techie but i can hold my own, if somebody could give me some step by step instructions and what to do as well as what not to do.

Get yourself a self-hosted Wordpress blog - it's the right option. I wish somebody had told me that back in 2003.

    Here's what I would do:

    1. Buy your domain and hosting through Godaddy, Hostgator, etc.
    2. After you purchase your domain and hosting, they will allow you to install wordpress as a blog platform! :-)
    3. Go to http://yoursite.com/wp-admin

You should be able to log into your wordpress site at the extension "/wp-admin' with the username and password you will create on Godaddy or Hostgator!

I remember back in the day when I first set it up.. It's a HASSLE if you don't have proper instruction. Don't hesitate to private message me for more help. (although this is no longer my niche, i'm always game for helping other

thank you. That is what I was kind of leaning toward but I needed some assurance since I have never done a blog. I have my domain and my hosting. I may get another domain just for the blog.

I think getting another domain just for your blog is a great idea. I would highly recommend getting your name as a domain if at all possible and then hosting your blog there. This way you can market yourself and establish yourself as a brand. I've only recently ventured into the world of blogging and Wordpress and didn't have a clue what I was doing at the beginning! But once you get it going and play around with it a bit, it's a doddle

Selfhosted Wordpress site is almost the choice of everybody, there are also plenty of free and paid themes to choose from to give your site a cool and professional look.

You don't need much experience to do that and with Hostgator you can be directed on what to do, it's that easy.

Sounds like you already have a website. If so, check and see if you have an autoinstaller like fantastico, softaculous, or simplescripts in your cPanel (control panel for your web hosting account). You can easily install Wordpress on another directory e.g. yoursite.com/wp or subdomain e.g. wp.yoursite.com of your website. If you don't have an autoinstaller then you can do a manual installation of Wordpress.

If you have any questions be sure to ask here or your web hosting provider.

If, by "go directly with Wordpress", you're referring to hosting a blog at wordpress.com, don't!

Their terms of service preclude anything to do with marketing, including even traffic-generation/redirection - and you can't own and control your pages there, in the long term.

Clearly you already have a site hosted somewhere, so maybe you could just have a subdomain called yoursite.com/blog and install Wordpress software in it? Where's your site hosted?

+1 to everyone who say go with self hosted, through wordpress.org

Google "starting a wordpress blog" and you will find tons of great stuff out there. I was in your shoes not that long ago and its really simple once you get the initial steps done. I recommend Hostgator to buy the domain and for hosting. They are the best!

      Hi Scrapquilter,

You should be able to find quality information with regards to how to install Wordpress on your site by looking at Youtube.

However, as one of the previous comments, you are best placed to look at your cpanel, if your hosting account has this. There are a number of way in which to auto install a Wordpress blog. You may be best to review any help section that your hosting account provides. These are typically quite good at explaining what you need to do. Otherwise you could raise a support call.

As per previous comments feel free to PM anyone who has said so on this thread. We are all very friendly.

      Happy blogging

Welcome to the Warrior Forum. You should start a blog on your own domain, so that you can control the content and build a list of targeted buyers. It's not difficult at all. Wordpress is very user-friendly. There are lots of courses that teach it. As for the theme of your blog, I recommend thinking about your hobbies. There's a very, very good chance that one or more of them is in a profitable niche market.

    Good luck,
    Joey

You can't go wrong with a self hosted Wordpress blog. It's easy to get it set up if you go with a good hosting company like Bluehost or Hostgator. I wouldn't waste time using a Wordpress hosted blog. If you are serious about building a successful blog, you're better off going on your own.

Just buy hosting, login into your cpanel and use SimpleScripts to install Wordpress. It does everything for you so you don't need to be techie at all.

Self-hosted wordpress is the best option, like others said.

I'm very glad I got this in the beginning, because it saved me a lot of trouble. You can perform a search and find all of the people who have been devastated by their blog being deleted from Blogger or Wordpress.com.

Surely that's not something you want to happen to you.

Here, installing WordPress is so easy a puppet can do it:

That site also has thousands of themes categorized, tagged, and customer reviewed in addition to plugins, templates, and well over 200,000 other items that might be needed.

As everyone here has stated you want to go the self-hosted route if you ever plan on monetizing your blog.

    Don't!:

Start out with a WPMU site. This is a multi-site platform that has one administrator that grants access to all the other blogs. Whenever the administrator decides to take down all the sites, he or she can. I made that mistake with my very first blog.

I think if you're just starting out then it's best to just go with an established provider like blog blogspot.com or wordpress.com

Its a good way to figure out the ropes and then when you feel more comfortable you can move to a self hosted solution. Then I'd definitely recommend installing wordpress.

    Good luck on your journey.

Wordpress is definitely the answer. Stating this up is very simply. All you need is a domain name which can be bought for around $10 or even cheaper and then you just need a hosting account. There are lots of different providers but I have found bluehost the be best so far.

Then from the Bluehost dashboard you can install wordpress onto your new domain.

Your blog is then your very own little asset. It is the nerve centre to building an online business and building a following and building your list.

It is a very very simple business model and extremely cheap.

My blog is still in early days and I haven't done a lot to it so far but the customisation is literally endless!!
