Taxes that will hurt affiliate marketers in Connecticut. Man, I hope this does not go through and does not become widespread.

Dana, politicians smell money like a trained pig on truffles. The only way to get them to change direction is to smack them on the snout.

Armed with very little real knowledge of how the Internet works, a lot of pols see it as one of those cash booths with money flying around just waiting to be grabbed. And they're standing there with all this lovely money floating around and they have their hands duct taped into their own pockets.

Fortunately, while snuffling about for ways to raise taxes, they also keep one finger in the air to see which way the breeze is blowing. (Now there's a visual for you...)

Given a choice between a new tax and appeasing real constituents (read voters), especially vocal constituents, most will see the advantage in backing the people in their district.

Angry is overrated. Serious, concerned and informed works much better. Once you get to the Congressional level, the staffers who man the phones have been yelled at by a lot of people. Most get marked down as kooks.

The approach advocated in the article Dana linked is simple and effective.

Of course, there's a quid pro quo involved. You will get your elected official's ear, and they will mark you as politically active. Come campaign time, they'll ask you to show them some 'support' - rendered as a statement that begins Pay to the order of...

Another stupid, government boondoggle. And I grew up in CT, too, but I'm not surprised to hear it, given CT's politics.

Now, all I have to do is wait to see how long this takes before spreading to Michigan.

The thing that I LOVE about internet marketing, in this era of big-box chain stores gobbling up all the mom and pop stores, is that it allows people to live the entrepreneurial dream and be their own boss. Until stupid government regulations come along and threaten it.

    Dana, you are so right....

The internet has represented a golden opportunity for the little guy to start with almost no capital and build a business (or at least an income of some sort).

The states have bloated budgets with many overpaid government workers and expensive pensions to support. In fact many states made a mistake years ago and grew fat off the high RE taxes on inflated properties. Now that bubble is bursting big time.

I'm not surprised they are eyeing internet taxes etc. Their local non-internet main street businesses are screaming at them that they are 'losing' sales to their internet competitors.

I'll bet in alot of these state official's minds they would be killing two birds with one stone: Appeasing the local biz community AND raising revenue to spend on more 'programs'.

Theres a reason why there will be so many "Tea Parties" around the US in just a few days.

People are fed up with a TOTAL tax burden now approaching 60% of income.
