The Importance of your Niche in List Building

New to list building? Here is a little help for the Newbies. If you have been on the forum for even a minute I am sure you have heard that the "Money is in the List"

Well here is a little help in getting started.

This guide is meant to help you find a niche that will not only make you tons of money. But keep that money coming in for years and years to come. If you are looking for a list of popular Niches just search on the Warrior Forum you will find several good threads that cover hundreds of different niches.

What I want to get across to you is that you will much better off finding a niche that both interests you and that you have experience with. If you do not have experience a desire to learn about a specific niche will suffice. One thing to make sure of is that there is more then one way to monetize your list.

What you don't want is a list of 10,000 subscribers and there are no products to offer your customer. Be sure to check various affiliate programs for ways to make money with your list. Here are a few Clickbank, Jvzoo, Market Health, Commission Junction, even Amazon. For more options just Google "Your Product Affiliates" you will be shocked at the search results.

Tip #1 Make sure that there is more then one method to "Monetize" your list. Nothing worse then putting all your eggs in one basket and the affiliate program you were using goes defunct. You always need several backups. As time goes by to keep your list productive you need more and more products to sell.

When you are trying to decide just which Niche that you plan to conquer make sure that you are using an "Evergreen" niche. What is that you ask? You want something that people are always going to need Weight Loss or How to Quit Smoking will always be popular, while something like Jail Breaking an iPhone 5 will fade away once new iPhones are released. Remember this is the Internet the work you do today will pay for years to come if you pick the right Niche.

Alright think about your interest's and hobbies. Do you like to Golf? Play Tennis? How about knitting or sewing? These are just a few niches that there are millions of people are always looking for information or new products. Any type of hobby or sport can be used to build a list.

Tip #2 Do you have the ability to produce your own product? Not only will you make all the money. It allows you to project yourself as an expert in the field.

If you are reading this on the Warrior Forum chances are that you are on several mailing lists in the IM or MMO niche that you are marketing to you daily. But this is not the norm online, your average man or woman in the US is on maybe one or possibly two lists. These are related to some problem or hobby that are looking for information on.

It may be how to perfect their golf swing or maybe they want to learn to sew. They are openly searching for these answers. So they are willing to buy your products.

Be sure to provide your list with good up to date information, take the time to know what you are talking about. Your subscriber base will anxiously await you email, if you have your finger on the pulse of your niche. In turn your open rate will skyrocket. The more of your emails that get opened and read, the higher your percentage of sales.

Points to Remember:
  1. Pick a Niche that you enjoy.
  2. Deliver your list good information on a regular basis.
  3. Do not send offers to your list everyday.
  4. Only offer products that you would use yourself.
  5. Make sure that the products you offer will solve their problems.
  6. Treat your list like they are your best friends.
  7. Sales = MONEY!
If you have any questions go ahead and post them here. I will check back and give you an answer as soon as possible.

      Thanks Steve and Nikita,

I see posts all of the time here on the forum from lost Newbies. There are tons of WSO's out about list building. Of course we all know why, as far as I am concerned this is the easiest way to build a solid income that other then hard work doesn't require anyone or any organization (As in Big Brother Google) to make a solid income.

But most WSO's don't spell out the simple stuff. I subscribed to every list I could find when I decided to step up to the plate and start my lists. Believe me I have made every mistake that I possibly could have.

But one mistake I have never made is to churn and burn my list. Currently I am hitting the unsubscride button daily on these jokers that never offer anything to me except an offer. That is just crazy.

Provide your listmembers what they are looking for and they will reward you. Also don't be afraid to reach out with a broadcast asking if there is some special information that they need that you are not supplying.

I am also only building 2 lists in the IM field. One of these I haven't even finished that funnel for, but I expect it will be grand. But the truth is I see much better returns from Weight Loss and other health niches. People in these niches are truly desperate in most cases. Plus they are not burnt out receiving 30 to 40 emails a day.

Anyway Thanks again for your input.

Great advice and I do have a question for you.

One of your tips is to make sure you can monetize your list. I currently have a digital scrapbooking website that I haven't touched in a year. It has about 30+ tutorial videos that I created giving tips on how to create digital scrapbooking pages using Photoshop Elements.

On the site, I also have an opt-in form to sign up for my e-newsletter and I currently have about 350 subscribers.

The problem I'm having is how to monetize the site (besides adsense) and what to sell to my subscribers? Like I said, I haven't touched the site in about a year and I've gotten subscribers as recently as a few days ago, so the site still gets visitors.

          Hi Mike,

Hey you might just be sitting on a gold mine...

          1. The people in your niche are always looking for the latest and greatest.
          2. There are tons of things that you can sell to your niche.
          3. My wife scrapbooks and she is constantly spending money on this, which has resulted in my two girls doing this as well.

First I would dump the adsense all together. (I can't see Google is sharing any real money with you). You are going to need the space to place your banners for all of the other sites that you can affiliate with.

If you are not using Amazon I would start. Yes the commission rate starts at 4% but quickly raises to 8%. Remember the idea is to get them to Amazon bringing your cookie along. I have sold many items that I never advertised.

Using a program like wp-robot or wpzonbuilder you can make a killer Amazon storefront. Honestly Google hates these sites (in my opinion) I would put it on another domain and just link to it. (No sense getting your site deindexed now is there?) You can also place amazon product links banner ads (if using wordpressThis refers to wpzonbuilder) on your site.

Now go to Google and search "scrapbooking affiliates" take a look and pick and choose. (I stoped looking at like the 3rd page)

As far as your list I don't know how often you are mailing your list. But this is what I would do.

I would mail advice/info at least once a week. In every email I would include a link to the "Product of the Week". If you have or have produced info products I would throw in a free ebook on occasion.

Then I would mail a newsletter once a month include several articles and several "Latest Scrapbooking Products" This might take a little work but 2 hours of work will result in a significant income.

I did not find any ebook type offerings I didn't look real hard althought there is nothing on clickbank. But because there are so many retail type products that are available through affiliates. But you can use links and banners in all of your mailings.

With just a little work Mike and you will be suprised what a hot niche you have.

Good Luck drop me a PM one day and let me know how it turns out.

I completely agree with list building and finding a niche that you enjoy and a niche that has demand that people want to buy in. List building is essential on the internet these days especially since it's part of the sales funnel. I build lists fast with facebook fans, but email work also.

      Hey Joey,

Thanks for the detailed answer. I appreciate it. In fact, I just started to revamp the site to freshen it up a bit. I do want to jump back into it head first and start making real money with the site.

If you don't mind, could I PM you to get some guidance and suggestions every once in a while? It would be nice to have someone kick me in the ass every once in a while to keep me going in the right direction.

Hey joey great tips. would you agree that more and more are venturing outside the IM niche to find success to the "noise level" of IM?

I am starting to feel like its easier to convert when you start building a list in a niche that addresses a real pain point for most people and is not as online savvy or have their guard up like the inherent and necessary skepticism of the IM audience.

Eniggma, I totally agree, while I do have two lists in the IM Niche, I am spending most of my time and effort in other niches that interest me. I like most americans need to lose 50 pounds so I am working on 2 different funnels. The reason for two is I found 2 great domains that I am going to build the sqeeze page on the domain and use a subdomain to make a blog. I just like niches outside of IM just for the fact that people out of the IM world are more likely to open an email that promises too fix their problem. Not to mention there is always a new diet.

      Ronorr,
It took me a long time to decide to make a list, long story short I didn't understand the process and it just didn't seem like fun. So after reading everything I could and finding a great Mentor, I have fallen in Love with List Building. I have one funnel that should be ready in about a week targeted just at List Building for Newbies and Intermediates. While I don't really have the time to mentor. I think through my new site I can help a lot of the people here that are ready to do the work but still a little lost.

Good advice man! I think it's super important to look through and follow these guidelines before you decide on a niche.

For me, the most important thing is to know that you are capable of creating a product in your target niche, and not just a low priced ebook but be able to create higher ticket products as well to offer as upsells to your customers in the future (or at least be able to promote high ticket items as an affiliate).

Good point......if you are able to create products in your niche you will most certainly do very well.

But the good thing about building a list you can also do well by picking
the best affiliate products. Always make sure that the products that you are pitching to your list work as advertised.

This insures your list is happy and responsive. It will also cut way back on your refunds.

      Hey Jessie,
Thanks still amazes me that the folks that provide us all with paid information
(WSO sellers) provide us with the basics. But leave out the nuances that really
put it all together so it can be considered a business in a box.

Might be my time to try my hand at a free WSO.

You need to know your market first if you want to average more than $5 per subscribers per month. It requires a lot of experience in a niche and a knowledge about what they really require. Getsubscribers.com will help you build the list, but you need to understand that nothing replaces the knowledge of the market.

    This is all very interesting.

My goal is to develop my own products in two niche areas: stained glass and space/sci-fi art creation. These are my passions and interests. I know that there are tons of people out there interested in these niche subjects...but I'm not seeing many affiliates out there for these things. And my list is TINY right now. Joey's posting gives me hope that I can eventually make money from these things, but it seems like it isn't a quick thing to do. The pain point for artists is the inability to make money regularly or market themselves effectively. But I'm not sure what the "pain point" for a hobby (such as stained glass) would be, other than the fact that the investment upfront in tools is a little scary. I've got lots of work ahead of me in product building, and in the meantime, am hoping to pick up some tips here on how to market when it comes time to put the products out there.

    Yours, in noobiness.

      Hello GeekGlass,

First off welcome to the Forum.

I don't really have much advice for the Sci-fi art. I guess you could use other Sci-fi affiliate stuff. There will be interest from your visitors. (Sorry not much help I know). Maybe another warrior has some suggestions.

But the Stained Glass is a Great Niche, my mother used to do stained glass. The best part of the hobby is there is a constant need to BUY STUFF!

I found several websites that offered affiliate programs by searching for "Stained Glass Affiliates" but Amazon will be your best friend. I know Amazon commissions are not the greatest. But your subscribers have constant need and are generally women who buy what they want. The beauty of the Amazon principle, is they may buy a washer and dryer after looking at a $3 stained glass item.

I would add an Amazon site on a subdomain and build it out with a program like wpRobot or WPzonbuilder (I use WpZonBuilder)

Build it on a subdomain or a junk domain as chances are Google will deindex it. They don't really like these sites. But since you are just going to link to it is doesn't matter.

I know that this is alot to digest, but take your time, you have picked a great niche that you obviously enjoy. That is two of the most important things to make a go of it online.

      Good Luck

@Joey Starkey; Sport and Hobby will be a evergreen topic to build a profit list-or is it better to go to sub niches?

Whatever list you build you need to build more than one list. The first list is your main list that everyone goes on. The second list is one that only your buyers go on. When a buyer subscribes for updates, Aweber allows you to unsubscribe them from the first list.
