Looking for fast and easy traffic? Try reddit (also the story of my site)

So for the past several months, my site has been living on scraps of traffic - 20 visits one day, 10 visits the next... things were looking poor. I then decided to take things a little more seriously (partly because I now actually have time to put into the site because of winter break). Every day that I haven't been working my other job (or snowboarding, I guess haha), I have been sitting down and working for the benefit of my site. I finally delved into social media. Created a twitter, revamped my Facebook page, created an Instagram, and created a Pinterest account (although I haven't really touched Pinterest). I made a new logo and collected a bunch of pictures for Instagram and profile backgrounds to make everything look pretty. I also sat down and spent a lot of time writing some quality articles.

I then decided to give reddit a go. I first started using Reddit for entertainment a little while ago, but I never really tried to get links to my site on there. So, I posted a link to my first ever written article on a relevant subreddit.

One link = 1500 views in around 8 hours. My previous highest for one day was 80, and that was an extreme outlier.

The funny (or not...) thing was, the article was not that great. And reddit ate it up and spat it back out... A bunch of unhappy comments. That was probably why I didn't get any Amazon affiliate link clicks.

Learned from my mistake and decided to forget my old articles and post one of my new ones (in a different relevant subreddit ). I did this this morning. I am still riding the #2 spot and I am expecting to hit #1 eventually. I have gotten over 400 views so far today and 16 affiliate clicks to $100 and up products (some of those views were from Stumbleupon, which is also great). I hope that I will see some sales tomorrow!

Anyways, I realized that if you have quality articles, reddit is a great place to get some great traffic (and also be able to talk to the people in the link comments section that will potentially buy products through your link). However, if you have crap articles, you will get crap traffic.

Sorry for the long winded post, but thought I'd share! So check out reddit if you guys/girls haven't.

You have to be careful with Reddit. That site will make you or brake you.

An example, search for "Supper overly jealous girl friend".

Reddit made this girl so big its unreal. And it all started with this video.

Look at how many views it has. All of it is because of Reddit.

I would have to say that is untrue. It depends on the niche you are in.

I seen a site make thousands in just a few hours. I forgot the name of it but it was a site where you pay $10 and you will receive a product worth at least $10. The catch is you don't know what that product will be.

Kind of funny but it made a killing off of Reddit.

Not true, at least for my niche. 292 views to one article specifically from reddit, 20 amazon affiliate clicks from that article. That's pretty damn good in my opinion.

I don't believe you've said - what if half those users at Reddit have an account with FB as well?

Any recommendations on traffic for good conversion?

I can generate traffic from twitter and other places but very few if any convert to sales.

      What places would you recommend?

I believe that it depends on what you are posting - are people interested in what you have to say or not?

It really depends on your niche.

Doesn't that apply to every niche? You should try to write about what people are interested in, no matter the topic.

I feel like using reddit to see what topics people in your niche are interested in is a good idea, since those are the people who will hopefully be giving you their business.

Reddit, SumbleUpon and Digg are all still great traffic sources if you have a worthwhile story you are promoting. I hit them with every post I make, and yes just about every time I get a nice bit of traffic. Some converts some doesn't. Usually good for a few Adsense clicks here and there. Also great links to have for SEO. My advice: Use Them

With Reddit/Digg etc. you get the traffic but they don't buy anything. Just idiots on porn breaks in my view.

Not always..... And those are still great links to have if you're looking to rank that page.

Seems like the jury is still out on whether traffic from reddit is useful. hmmmmmmm wonder would it work for plr? or for children's sci-fi?

Nothing long about that! Thanks for sharing.

I'm always looking for ways to get some traffic and writing articles is one thing I do enjoy doing.

Thanks to your post I will actually spend some time on reddit and see if it fits me.

    Thanks again,

    So update:

    Only one sale...

However, I did get a bunch of Twitter followers and a few Facebook page likes from the traffic (I link to those pages on the sidebar of my site). So, I guess I worked on building the community around my site a bit - got some more exposure.

Conclusion - at least for my post, my niche, whatever... conversion was not great. However, it can't hurt to use sites like reddit to build community.

Bad conversion rate?!?!? 20 clicks and 1 sale? That's a 5% conversion rate. Anything between 5-10% on Amazon is usually considered great. You've found something that works, now upscale it so that you get 10 sales per day!!!

Nice post Brendan! In my opinion traffic is traffic, especially when it is free. It takes less than a minute for someone to post their articles on sites like Reddit, and there really is no downside to it. You get a quality backlink and most assuredly at least some free traffic.
