An Odd Question: Do You Have to Reveal Your Sites?

So, this is a rather odd question. Since starting to make websites last year, I've obviously learned a lot. And I think I can levy some of the skills I've gained in applying for a position that I want. The question is - I have a lot of the skills they're looking for - which I've learned through making my own sites - but in applying for the job, I don't really want to reveal the sites I currently have.
Is it strange to talk about the experience I have without mentioning the specific sites? Could I just say I don't want to reveal the sites or this that strange?
What do you guys think about this?

You can say you work for other clients and without their permission you can't reveal their site..

You can go I into details of what you have done and give some explanation too..

    Hope this helps

Yes it is weird. If you cant show proof, I wouldn't trust you.
I don't know you and they don't either.

Build a site just for them. Show them the skills you have.

If you do have these skills, wouldn't take long at all to build a site just to show off your skills

    Best of luck

It's not going to fly with any interviewer worth his salt. You need to show your sites if you expect to be taken seriously.

I have conducted hundreds of employee interviews and I can tell you from experience that any "withholding" rings alarm bells and will definitely not go down well.

It's one thing not to have supporting evidence it's altogether another to have some and not be willing to show it.

I'm already questioning why you don't want to show your work. You may have a great reason but I can assure you it will not fly with an interviewer.

If your work is good, show it off, if not create something suitable for your prospective interviewer. If needs be just duplicate something you already have and change it to suit your interview.

Me personally? I'd want to see a portfolio.

But I think you already knew that or you wouldn't have asked the question

Show them your sites. If they were successful you wouldn't need to look for a job.

I don't have to reveal my sites, no. And I don't - not my business ones, anyway. But I'm not offering to build sites for anyone.

If the service you're selling is a site-building service, then you'll clearly need some sort of portfolio of sites you've built, to show to potential clients (and that's what all your competitors have - do you want to be the only one without examples of your work to show?).

I run into this occasionally with potential business plan consulting clients. They want to read other plans we've written. However, we sign a confidentiality agreement with our clients prohibiting us from even giving their company a a reference without their written position, much less giving away copies of their business plan.

Fortunately, my partner and I are the authors of three commercially published business books, with a fourth on business planning to be released in February. This demonstrates our credibility in the field and shows our writing skills.

What I would do if I were you is to create a site (or a few sites) in niches that you aren't worried about competition in...create those sites as a resume that you can show to others without worrying about revealing your niches. It's a win/win.
