What is the best way to get rid of comment spam?

Hi people, I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a good way to get rid of comment spam.

Each day I am receiving emails of a new comment on my blog hoping it's actually someone interacting with me but alas no it's just another spam generated pile of s***.

Does adding a captcha in the comment section help or would I still receive a lot of spam.

I am just worried of having my blog hacked.

    Steve,

Your best bet to get rid of comment spam is to actually allow people to post their comments but you will need to approve it first.

That is one thing you can do.

The next thing you can do is to get rid of blog commenting all together. People will always spam your blog with useless comments. You need to understand that. Most people just want a back link to their website and nothing else. They do 10's of them every single day.

I've had good results lately with a free plugin called "Spam Free Wordpress."

Several of the client blogs I manage began receiving (obviously) bot generated comments to the point that monthly bandwidth allotments were being challenged. So far that little free plugin has stopped it all cold.

Downside is, it stops legitimate commenting as well.

Try Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin. This plugin works amazing.

It adds a client side generated checkbox to the comment form requesting that the user clicks it to prove they are not a spammer. Bots wont see it so their spam comment will be discarded.

Well, if you are using Wordpress, there is a plugin that hget rid of spam. You just need to type in "best wordpress plugins" and find an anti-spam plugin for your blog in case you use Wordpress.

If you find the spam showing up on older posts, You can set up Word Press to close the comments after a few days or weeks.

I have done that on a few of my websites and the spam stopped.

In your wordpress admin panel go to settings>discussion and make sure you have things like Must login to leave a comment, and administrator must approve all comments.

You can always edit comments. Sometimes a comment is good but it is blatant spam, so I just edit out all the links then approve the comment

The best way is to allow only registered users to comment. So far my blog has never gotten even a single spam comment which allows only registered users to comment.

Good one. Another way is to use facebook comment instead of the built-in comment system.

I was getting spam comments with backlinks on one site frequently. The posts were never listed on the site due to me not approving the comments, but they were flooding my inbox.

I installed two wordpress plugins that completely eliminated the problem.

the first plugin, as mentioned above is Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin
here is their site: GrowMap Anti-Spambot Plugin
After installing that plugin, I have gotten no spam comments for backlinks.

the second plugin I've installed, and was kind of surprised at the results, was Better WP security
    Better WP Security - Bit51.com
this plugin does allot, I've left most options alone. The one thing it has shown me is that the site I've installed this on is: People are sporadically trying to gain access to wp-admin. In the plugin you can set the number of failed attempts for login before the IP is blocked. If you'd like, the plugin will send an email to you when someone tries to log into your admin panel after a set amount of failed login attempts.

You can also find these plugins within the wordpress admin panel, but the links above are directly to their sites.

I make sure that I have to approve of the comment before it is accepted. I get that stuff pretty often as well.
