How to Have Dedicated Server Monitored?

Hey Warriors,

I just set up a dedicated server for a vbulletin forum. I have a fully managed dedicated server. But if/when the server crashes I have to notice it and call the server company to have them reboot.

Does anyone know of a company that will monitor the server and call my server company immediately when that happens? It's too much responsibility for a single person, it needs to be handled by a company.

Do you have any experience with a firm that handles this successfully?

Thank you for taking the time to help

Aloha,
Brian Campbell

If the whole website is going down you could use a service like Pingdom that texts or emails you whenever it happens so you know almost immediately.

If your server was truly a managed server than they would do this for you. Are you sure it is managed?

Fully Managed servers they have everything in place and are notified immediately if the server goes down, hardware faults etc... Semi-Managed they don't really do a lot unless you request it, they will reboot the server if it needs it and should handle hardware problems etc... But, they have the same information and contacted the same no matter what level of support you have.

It depends on the webhost, some only offer Managed (Fully Managed) or NO management at all.
    Others only have managed.

I used to use a 3rd party server management company but they seriously went down hill and a lot of people and companies canceled the contract with them. There are 3rd party services that you can use, free and paid that will contact you if your server goes down, sites are not loading etc... These are software based services.

You can also set that up yourself via a second webhost and install a script you wrote yourself or can get many online for free that will test and check the availablity of your server and sites on it.

Another option is to run a software from your local computer that will periodically ping your server and alert you if it can't be reached.

Though I personally would look at your webhost and see what all they are actually doing for you. It maybe that it is a budget hosting outfit that isn't really looking out too well for their customers. There are many hosts out there, some do better jobs at servicing their clients than others.

As the person above noted, there are tons of server alert services. Just create an alert for your server and you will usually receive an email or message if it ever goes offline.
