Anything new in the world of link cloaker scripts?

Well, congratulations IMers, Google is returning more garbage than ever!

I was looking around for anything new in link cloakers, and almost everything Google returned was useless crap. A couple of affiliate landing pages. But mostly crap. I didn't find one single site for someone who actually OFFERS a link cloaking script.

Does that mean nobody uses them any more?

Even searching here in the WSO section doesn't yield anything except WP plugins.

What's new?

I think that is because Google doesn't like link cloaking so they took the appropriate measure for removing also from the results those kind of black hat utilities.

There's nothing "black hat" about using redirects. Some people do use them for nefarious purposes. But if you want to post a link somewhere and you want the ability to change where it goes later, but you won't be able to change that link ever, then you NEED a redirect.

Unfortunately, most people don't think about the role that redirection plays in the world -- only "cloaking". I mostly use my links for redirection, not cloaking. And I want to be able to open a control panel and change the target of the redirect easily. None of the free online services let you edit your links once they're set. So they mainly cater to the "cloaking" crowd since they're static and unchangeable.

Redirection is like forwarding your phone calls. You can get a permanent phone number and forward it to whatever phone number you're at today. If you can't change the forwarding number, then you're screwed.

They're also great for tracking click-thru rates. Using naked URLs, you cannot track clicks. But if you use a redirect, the redirect logic can also collect statistics on clicks. Goo.gl does that, and a couple others do as well.

Strangely, virtually none of the services that DO collect and report statistics do any sort of useful analysis beyond just raw clicks over time. Goo.gl shows little graphs and a map of the countries where they originated.

In my personal opinion, throwing up naked URLs when you're trying to market a product or service is like driving a car cross-country with a blind-fold on. You have no idea where you're at from one minute to the next; you have no way to change direction; you don't know your conversion rates (sales per click); and you have no way of determining how to improve your profits.

That's what most people call "basic business tactics" not "black hat techniques".

Probably nothing new because the "technology" behind it hasn't changed for ages.

It's not a script but there's some simple code in Yahoo Answers here. Or there's a fancier one here in the Warrior Forum.

The first link I found when I searched for link cloaking script was this, which seems to be what you're after, albeit at a price.

Or there's ones on Clickbank like this.

The Best Damn Redirect by Richard Wing & Greg Lloyd just had a major update and now does some very cool stuff apart from just cloaking.

It was actually very useful before the update...even better now. If you are quick you can still grab it at around $10 (normally $147) http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...-holidays.html

I'm aware of the simple PHP scripts that can be used to create redirects. Also, I use Mike Filsaime's Power Link Generator (PLG) and have a copy of The Best Damn Redirect (although I haven't updated it in ages).

I'm just wondering if there's anything much new. Easy Redirect Script is about the only thing that's shown up in a while. The page is fairly complete, but it doesn't seem to report much in terms of statistics, and it doesn't say whether the code is encoded or if it can be modified. (Can anybody here who's got a copy tell me if it's normal php or if it's all garbled or encoded?) I should probably take a closer look at it.

I posted a very similar question in Yahoo Answers yesterday and included a fake site address w/a fake affiliate id (it was sooooo obvious that it was merely an example relating to the question I asked) and someone reported me as spam and they deleted the darned thing and penalized me. I was so put out! I was only looking for someone to tell me how to do a php redirect step-by-step.

At any rate, I keep looking for a cloaker as well. I have tried Pretty Links, Affiliate Link Cloaker along with a few others and nothing works. When you click on the actual ClickBank product, you still see my affiliate id. I am really bummed by this because I am so concerned about this. So, I will be watching this thread very closely to see if anyone lists something that works.

I hate to tell you this, but if your affiliate link isn't showing up at the bottom of Clickbank sales pages, you aren't gonna get a commission. You are not going to find a "link cloaker" that can "fix" this without losing all of your commissions.

In RAP, there are a lot of users who've make a pretty big stink about the fact that their affiliate ID is NOT visible anywhere during the check-out process! It makes them very nervous not knowing who exactly is getting credited for the sale, even though in many cases it's obvious -- but not always.

I think if most CB affiliates preferred that their aff ID not be shown, CB would hide it. But without it, you have no idea who's getting the credit for the sale EVER.

Okay, I did not know that. The way it stands now anyone can very easily delete our id and insert theirs, or delete our id and just go straight to the product page. There has to be something we can do to protect our commissions.

The newest products to come out were EasyRedirectScript and Linktrackr.

I'm currently using Linktrackr because it centralizes all my links in one place. I can then install their WP plugin that syncs with the central database and fetches all my links and converts the keywords I specify. This saves me TONS of time. Oh...and it tracks conversions. It's a monthly fee and more pricey.

One of my own products, Affiliate Site Quick, could be considered a "different" link cloaking script because it allows to "clone" a target page to your own URL. Which means that an external link would become an internal link instead. This is as "advanced" as I could imagine a link "cloaking" script to be?

But aside from that, for my every-day purposes, when i link out i ALWAYS use simple PHP redirects, and I have never, ever seen a need to get me a "link cloaking script". Even if i would need an "advanced" solution (where "advanced" would simply mean making a link "prettier")...eg. I could use wordpress plugins or do some .htacess tweaks in a few seconds which do the same thing. Takes like 10 seconds to turn an ugly link into a pretty one with an entry in .htaccess.

Sure, if you consider serving someone else's content from your server to be "advanced". Without permission to do so though, it's copyright infringement. If you do have permission, you might as well just get permission to serve a copy of the page the regular way and eliminate anything which might be considered cloaking as that would be unnecessary.

There was another cloaking product some years ago which grabbed the affiliate page using file_get_contents and then echoed it out. The owner of the product did not seem to understand how this could be considered copyright infringement. He claimed that since the site was never stored on his server (it was, if even for a millisecond) that he wasn't serving someone else's content. His script essentially proxied other people's content while also stuffing a cookie, which I'm guessing is what the above mentioned script does.

Affiliates should beware of these types of scripts.

Be sure not to piss off anyone important with that. Copying a webpage is copyright infringement, and the creator of a tool to facilitate that copying is liable for contributory and vicarious copyright infringement. That's what killed Kazaa/Grokster/Morpheus when their creators were held legally liable for the infringement of their users -- and it doesn't take much to elevate it to criminal scale with prison time
