Interesting theory about Amazon Affiliate code

Hey everyone,

I was reading the IamA by creator of thisiswhyimbroke.com which can be found here

If you aren't familiar to the site, it displays cool items. Some items are affiliate links.

In it he says:

"About 66% comes from Amazon. The rest is other small affiliate programs and Google Adsense. The reason why we link to Amazon whenever possible is because most people are not interested in actually purchasing the things we list on the site - but if they go to Amazon there is a possibility of them buying a normal item like a book or a DVD. In fact, of the Amazon sales, over 80% of it is from products not shown on ThisIsWhyImBroke."

Over 80%! That's huge!

So I was wondering, do people who make money of Amazon Affiliates notice a similar trend?

If so, doesn't that open up some options for websites? Because you don't have to close in around one specific product. But you just have to get the user to click through the link?

Thanks guys

I just visited the site and I noticed the large variety of products listed. I'm thinking that the people that are visiting & clicking through aren't specifically interested about a certain product Vs. the ones that are searching for "product xyz review".

I rarely sell unrelated products because my traffic is very targeted.

I think that posting a product review/comparison chart Vs. building a website that's very creative and general is totally different.

Oh and btw I really liked that website

I agree. I'm not trying to say the opposite, rather just wondering if other people have similar trends with people not actually buying the products they click through on, however buy something else during the 24hour cookie period.

Why do you think 80% is so much? A site that may not be trusted directs you to a well known site that sells HOW many products? I would be surprised if 80% of the sale were for the item they advertised!

I like TIWIB, haven't been on it for a while. I can easily believe that 80% of items they sell are NOT stuff they advertise as most of the things they advertise are quite wacky and not stuff people buy every day. I've noticed similar trends on some of my sites.

Yes that is normal for an amazon affiliate website. I have seen days in a row where everything sold through my affiliate link is for products I do not promote.Amazon is a master at converting people into sales once they reach the website. Because of this strength I make a good income as an Amazon affiliate.

How many times do we go into a store looking for one item and come out with ten? Targeted Traffic ends at your door step - once they're in, the buyer is in control. You don't sell the majority that come. But the majority that come do buy things otherwise. It is the presence of opportunity that works in this case - they have an opportunity to look and shop at Amazon. Therefore, your site is a glorified "adsense" type site.

Using Amazon in this way is good and they foster it. I make sales mostly from things I'm not selling on my key sites. I can get the traffic, but they like to search and make themselves a find through my affiliate link.

We must understand the nature of what it is you're advertising. Adsense is different from Clickbank and Amazon is distinct from them both. There are common things that many marketers use to address in their efforts but their differences is where the money is to be made.

Adapt your site and efforts to these differences and you will make money. Different nature to the offer and different market searching for each = different site / marketing approach to implement and different traffic engagement to expect and foster.
