Twitters be ware of virus.

A bad week for Twitter just got even worse.

The service has apparently been infected by a worm originating from the owners of the website StalkDaily (Note: Do not visit this website, as it may cause your computer to become infected). At this point details are scant, but it appears that visiting the Twitter profile page of an infected user can lead your profile to become infected as well (some reports say that the worm modifies your 'About Me' section to include a link to the worm). Infected users begin to repeatedly spam tweets directing users to the StalkDaily website.

    Hi Quentin:

Thanks for mentioning the situation. About an hour ago some people that I follow/they follow me had posted about the site they believe is the cause of the trouble. It's a shame that is the first I heard about it because I have a decent amount of followers and have been on the site a lot lately (a product launch is coming soon).

Thanks for looking out for the Warriors!

It was an XSS exploit that was used. There was a "patient zero" whose account was (apparently) removed. Whether that was the actual starting point or whether that user was compromised through a third-party site (perhaps a phishing site) is unknown at this point, so far as I know.

When you visited a compromised user's profile, the script would write itself into your profile and use your account to send out tweets with the StalkDaily invite. Then, if someone viewed your profile, they'd be compromised too.

Twitter's status page reports that they have "taken steps to close the holes" that had made it possible for the exploit to spread.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Interesting. I don't usually "browse" twitter sites and I do all my updates and tweets via my cellphone or on Digsby.

I suppose the only way for me to have been infected was if I checked the profile of a new follower from a confirmation email.

I got hit by the worm...

To fix it, update your profile settings.
Change your name and your URL, it'll
      get you fixed up nicely.

Just to be really safe, you can go
and change your password as well.

Mikey from StalkDaily has admitted and accepted responsibility for the attack...

He still has some trails of it in there and Twitter are working to remove it now...

He must have been mighty bored with those genius fingers of his... he could be a monster if he put it to good use.

    Peace

Could this possibly cause you to lose your account because of being accused of spamming?
