How to prevent copying

How do you prevent someone from copying your original on-page content on your site. It seems that alot of people copy articles from sites and then post them (with some changes) as if they are their own

Does this cause any problems with your ranking? what about the fact that you are the original writer? doesnt google know that the content is really originally yours because it was seen there first?

any help would be apprecated

There isn't much but I think this outlines everything you can do...

    Prevent:
    1. Put a transparent graphic over your article.
    - People can remove it via changing on page html

    2. Make your whole article a graphic.
    - People can re type the article themselves but most likely won't
    - No SEO value

    3. Do not have an RSS for people to use for autoblogs.
    - No RSS for your readers

    4. Put a notice down by your privacy policy footer area how you will take action on those that copy your articles.
    - They probably will ignore.

Make the most of a Copy:
    1. Put a few links in the article to your site.
+ If its copied blindly you may get free backlinks

    2. Write about your specific product in your article (ie. Joes SEO service)
+ People who read the article elsewhere will now google Joes SEO service

    After The Fact:
    1. Send DMCA notice to site that copied
    - They may do nothing

    2. Send DMCA notice to their host, merchant processors, email service... etc
    - They still may do nothing

    3. Sue them
    - Very expensive and time consuming

So after reading this the best thing to do is write more articles! There are always going to be people copying you and for the most part, they will get away with it completely! Copying your work just means it was pretty awesome and they wish they could do it themselves... so take pride in the fact that you were copied.

Wouldn't it make more sense to use a WP plugin which doesn't allow copying instead of those options? Not sure if it can be done with non-WP sites though.

If you are the original source, and your pages have been indexed, you have nothing to fear as far as rankings go from google in terms of people copying your content.... if they copy your content.

Copy and paste it into paint, then upload it as a graphic. That will prevent copying but it will cut at your SEO at the same time. There's no good solution -- just assume that Google's got you covered in terms of copying. (Which it increasingly does).

You can't prevent it. You can disable the copy function from a browser, but most people use bots to copy content from your page. As a side note, if their website has less authority it will never rank above you. Panda penalizes websites with stolen content and most scraper sites pose no threat really.

My guess is, you should worry less about who copies your content and more on increasing your overall site authority.

If you are using Wordpress for your website, there are plugins that you can get for free. When you install them, no one can copy and paste your content.

    Hope this helps,

You can install the DMCA WordPress plugin (free) and register your sites content.

    DMCA Protection & Takedown Services

Put the badges on your site.

It is more of a deterrent, but may prevent copy/pasters who have a conscience and may tell search engines that this is YOUR copy - no one else's.

    Every little bit helps...

You could also try Copyscape. If the content they steal from you is not 100% original according to Copyscape, they won't be rewarded by Google.

Long ago the web content creation experts understood that preventing someone from copying your content was simply impossible, however important initiatives like Creative Commons have been developed enabling you to easily share but also clearly set the rights you are willing to give away or restrict when someone needs or wants to use your content.

Also as long as you have published the content first and made sure the Search engines knew about it, for example promoting your blog posts on Facebook, Twitter, etc as soon as you publish the content (Hint: Google + ) you will keep the authorship for the content, also any other site copying your content with no citation etc is simply harming their own rankings, etc.

    - Still depending the case legal actions can be taken if you consider necessary.
