Can I switch hosting in 8 hours??

So I was a complete dumbass and forgot about this until now. My yearly payment for hosting is due to tomorrow. Instead of this standard 70 dollar plan from Fusion I would like to buy 5 unique IPs for $240 from SEOHost. So I mine as well just save the 70 dollars and switch now. Is this doable in 8 hours? (Wordpress site- never done it before)

Will thank
Kyle

Yes, doable. The only area of concern might be the nameserver change which might take more than 8 hours to propagate!

You can easily transfer the files, etc. in the meantime and redirect your domain nameservers to the new host. Once that's done, you're all good. :-)

How do I transfer the files?

I've read about this but it is confusing me. There is a complete backup, mysql, and some other kind of backup and they all have different purposes. Could someone walk me through it? My sites have good rankings right now so I'm cautious.

Most "complete backups" AREN'T! I don't know what YOU are talking about, but the MYSQL area, especially on SHARED services(READ NOT a dedicated server) are often NOT in your area, so a file backup WON'T back them up. A mysql backup will back THEM up, but nothing else. ALSO, MYSQL is no longer necessarily compatible with MYSQL. That means that even if you DID copy the raw database files, they might not be compatible.

If it were m, I would do BOTH. If there is nothing in MYSQL, it will go quickly, and the only way a backup program will backup MYSQL is if it specifically says it will, or MAYBE is an app that uses MYSQL and is backing up its own data.

Did you check with SEOHost? They may offer to transfer your entire site over for you.

Yes, it's doable to make a switch in as little as 2 hours the most.

DNS propagation may requires from 2-48 hours.

But, If you could perform a full backup, then shouldn't be any problem for you.

    Are you using cpanel hosting?

If you're using cPanel, a "Full Backup" from "Backups" will package the entire account. It will include the things listed below as well as others:

    Files
    Mail messages
    Mail Accounts
    Mail forwarders
    SQL databases
    addon domains
    sub-domains
    DNS zone files

Other things are included in the backup as well, but those are the main things backed up.

The account can then be restored on any other cPanel based system easily and will retain all settings, files & login information. When you start to reach large backup file size, (entire tar.gz compressed backup) you can run into problems however, it's not very frequent.
