If anything, Dating is probably a sub niche of the relationship market.

The relationship niche is pretty broad and can include a lot of sub niche's such as, dating, long distance, marriage, sex, get back your ex, divorce.

Perhaps we could help more if we knew why the differentiation is important?

I've written quite a bit on dating and relationships. They are very different. They occupy different spots on a timeline. The needs and issues involved are different.

well neither one of them are niches, they are both markets

    a niche would be

online dating for 35 year old single ladies
or online dating for retired folks
or online dating for the recently divorced

but to answer your question they are two different things, dating is for single people looking for a relationship, the relationship market is for people who are already in a relationship and the various niches inside of that.

You are thinking about niches. Niches could be about age, male, female, race, religion, etc.

Dating I would say would be part of the relationship niche, like marriage. Relationships is too general a term and can be about any number of topics within the category. Dating can also have different directions such as "Mature Dating" "Dating for college students" "Dating after a divorce". All in all I would say both are different.

Relationships is a category or as nicholasb pointed out, a broad market. Dating would be a sub-category of this market, but would generally be too broad to classify as a niche. I know its semantics, but the nice thing about a niche from a marketing standpoint is that you can quickly identify the type of customer that fits into it.

You may or may not be able to immediately picture an ideal customer in the dating marketing, but you can immediately personify an ideal customer for the over 50 western dating niche.

The Dating "niche" also sometimes goes into the whole "pick up girls/guys" arena, which I venture people would exclude from the Relationship "niche".

I could not resist this question
when you refer to relationship that is rather broad since that
can also apply to relationship with the following:
        children
        your boss
        your workmates
        schoolmates etc.
You get the point but overall this was a good question
and the answer to these were also relevant

I am in both of these "markets". Dating and relationships are HUGE billion dollar markets!

Both of these belong in the same "family" however, they are composed of HUNDREDS of niches!

For example, dating can be broken down into thousands of niches such as:

    Senior dating
    African American dating
    Hispanic dating
    Greek dating
    teen dating
    Over 40 dating
    Chicago dating
    Dallas dating
    red neck dating
    Asian dating
    London dating
    Indian dating
    Italian dating
    Single dating
    Aries dating

Now, the relationship market covers an infinite of topics and ideas such as:

my Capricorn husband... how to make him want me
how to make my girlfriend love me more
how to get back with my lost love
how to have a relationship with my best friend without jeopardizing our friendship
my wife is bored in bed
how to make our long distance relationship work

So you see...dating and relationships are in the same "family" of markets, but their niches can be quite different.

Separate - as someone else said, dating is more how to meet them, talk to them, get them to date you. Relationships are usually when they've been dating and there's trouble.
