Default PayPal Subscriptions - what's the deal with this?

Ok, just curious if anyone else has experienced this before.

When I sign up for paypal subscriptions, I usually get charged upfront amounts that get taken from my paypal account....which is obviously what I expect and what I want.

I noticed today though that for the reoccuring payments of the subscriptions, my funding source is listed as my actual bank account? It does not give me the option to select "paypal funds"...only echeck and credit card? What gives?

Does this just mean it will bill my bank account IF there is no paypal funds left?

Or will this automatically bill my bank account each month instead of my paypal account? Weird stuff.

Hmm...I could have sworn that I have had subscription funds taken directly out of my paypal account before though....

Any other insights?

Paypal will just deduct from your account whatever it can deduct from. If you have any funds/balance in there, that is what/where it will take from first.

If there are no funds in there, then it will deduct from whatever accounts/cards you have added and specified as your primary funding source in your Paypal settings.

Let's say you have a subscription for $50 and you have a Paypal balance of $30.

When your subscription comes up, Paypal will straight away deduct from your Paypal balance all $30, and then charge/deduct from your bank account or credit card the remaining $20.

Thats what I always thought del,

I just noticed that when I click "details" for whatever specific active subscription I am looking at, it will say "funding source: bank account, echeck, credit card", but not "paypal funds", and I got a little worried.

I think it just means you are AUTHORIZING those as a payment methods. But as with any other payment, if you have funds available in Paypal, it uses those first.

Any payments are deducted first from Paypal balance and then next from your designated source.

That's stated on the paypal site - problem is searching their "help" section is a pain sometimes.

This sounds like an error, I think you should contact them directly. Good luck!

I think Paypal will only allow you to sign up to a subscription if you have credit card details online so that if you don't have enough funds in your paypal account to pay the monthly subscription then they can charge it to your credit card.

That is my understanding of it and from the person who you are subscribed to view, that is fair enough as it is insuring that you do make the payments every month.

If you have a reserve on paypal, it would make sense that they wouldn't use the paypal account balance.

This keeps happening to me too. I keep setting my backup as a credit card and it keeps reverting to my bank account. I finally deleted my bank account as a payment option to solve the problem.

On a side note...why the hell is it so damn hard to cancel a subscription? It takes like 20 steps and lessons to get to where you can cancel those!

Whenever your credit card is about to expire they bill you with that card for every subscription. It doesn't have anything to do with your balance or your bank account its just their policy.

Keep an eye on your cards experation date from now on. It starts about a month before the experation date on your card. The worst part about it is that if your new card hasn't come yet you can't do a blame thing about it.

I think if there is no fund on you paypal account, it will automatically deduct on your credit or bank account that you added at paypal. I have experienced it too years ago.

Well its just that way with canceling the subscriptions, it took me about 3 tries before I knew how to find it. I had to ask the electronic help desk. Its not hard once you figure it out. The instructions are right there.
