Sell Domain or Website?

Hi fellow warriors, I need some wise advice. I have an 81/2 year old PR3 site which used to get a couple of thousand visitors a day. Now down to 300 - 400. I have cleaned up all the content but I'm just sick of the sight of it.

I know it need lots of links because many sites that used to link to it have disappeared, but I just don't want to do it. I took off Adsense a while back so it's not earning very much.

Should I take it down and sell the domain or sell it as a site. Also where would be the best place. It costs around $29 to sell just a domain on Flippa.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Sell it like it is, whoever buys it will probably replace the site anyway but may want to handle 301 redirects before they do.

I'd sell it like it is rather than remove the content, particularly if that content results in the current traffic. The new owner can decide whether to keep the content or change or remove it. Why haven't you tried to monetize the traffic?

Hi Sbucciarel, I took adsense off originally to improve the bounce rate (which it did). There is also pagination on the site which splits a long page into 2 or 3 pages. However the adsense plugin is now putting ads all over the place. I can't seem to get rid of the pagination without manually doing each page & there's over 200 of them.

      Hope that makes sense!

At first, it is obvious that flippa is the best place online for you if you want to sell your website. i would rather ask you to list the site as it is on flippa, with all the criteria the site possesses, i have the believe that you are going to sell the site at reasonable price there. Hope this help.

Yeah I know you're right and I used to think Flippa was great. However I think they've gone downhill a bit and there's an awful lot of crap on there.
However that's what I'll probably end up doing. There's no real competition for Flippa unfortunately.

    You have 81 PR3 Domains ?
Wow, you can sell LINK EXchange or LINK Trade from your sites.

If you only have 1 PR3,
Sell full website if you DON'T NEED it,.

Wendy, if you were doing up your house for a sale would you strip it clean of all decor, not even paint?

No you would tart it up a bit, so get the traffic on the increase and sort out the plugins that are causing you grief.

Just get some gigs on Fiver if you do not have the time, energy or spirit for this domain.

Look at your analytics, figure out where your best traffic came from and take the site in that direction.

Restore the content from an old backup, put a fresh lick of paint on it with a new theme.

Look for multiple ways to monetize it, again based on where you were getting the best income before.

PM me the domain if you want and I can give you some ideas.

Sell your complete website. You are still in a position to get good price at this visitors rate... rest depends upon your niche and visitors interest etc....

Even domain rate is bit low because your domain is 8.5 yrs old... well try some other platforms and offer bidding....

Thanks everyone for your input. It is appreciated.

I think you should sell the website since It is a PR3 with decent amount of traffic. Flippa is an awesome place to sell it as it has lots of traffic and the most important investors in websites seem to be there.

Yes I would fix it up as best as you can. An 8 year old site would have great appeal to the right person. Maybe even list it here on Warrior Forum for sale.

    Hey Wendy

Treat your aged DN like a gold bar... will always be worth more to you than anyone that buys it!

Would suggest a complete rethink on the niche and content present, if it is still getting 300-400 uniques, that is still enough to bank monthly from on the website.

Also as Suzanne has mentioned, why have you not monetized the current layout/graphics with some yummy CPA offers?

After all, you do get some traffic that could be converted

Let us all know what the niche is as well!

If it were me I'd fix the content, monetise it and get some SEO done; it sounds like you've got a decent piece of real estate there.

However if you can't be bothered Flippa is still the place to sell. There is a lot of rubbish on there, but a good site such as yours should rise above sufficiently to get a good price.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Raffman, I have spent weeks on this site removing all the seo, taking keywords out of titles etc, because it was thought that was why Google had penalized it. I removed all dead links, cut out crappy content ect. All duplicate content removed too.
Now I have to start linking again, but no idea as to what works and what doesn't any more. I would sell it in a heartbeat but can't get adsense back on it because of a complicated pagination system. So it's not bringing regular income.

It's sort of a catch 22 if you get my meaning!

google is continuing updating its algorithm towards organic search.. that is why if something on top might be get down in future because of some update...

use keywords in titles etc.. but go natural as much as possible

Sell together with your site able to get higher value compare to only domain name .
It would be great that you can bring back the couple thousand of traffic back cause 300-400 per day show your site are not enough value already .

Because even you sell only domain , they also will try to check all your site backlink, traffic and so on for the previous before purchase.

selling domain in sedo is better than flippa.

Wendy, I concur with everyone who says selling the site itself.

Flippa is filled with people who want a fixer upper like your site. Just give them some additional ideas of what can be done along with what you've done previously and chances are you'll get a lot more money than just selling of the domain or selling the site without any advice or potential game plan for the buyer.

Good luck. Let us know what happens.

It really depends on the level of the domain. For large domains, I use sedo. If it is a quick flip on a domain, dp, and if I don't get great results, i try ebay. I've used sitepoint, but you have to have very nice name there.

Ebay is a STRANGE place for domains. I've sold domain on ebay for $80 that I couldn't sell on dp or sitepoint for $20. I've also sold domains on ebay for $8 that I thought could sell for over $100.

I'm going to get major hatemail for saying this but I would just sell the domain only.

Why? I'm a believer in "agile development"; meaning I like to do everything as "easy and clean" as possible.

Selling a domain name? Easy as pie. Transferring a domain with the content intact? That's a lot of communication.

The cheapest way to sell the domain only? Check out GoDaddy auctions. (I think it's like $4-$5).

    Good luck!

Many thanks to everyone for their input, very valuable. Thanks for the Sedo suggestion, I will go and check them out. I also have a good name on Sitepoint, i just thought they'd merged with Flippa? Selling the site as a whole makes sense I agree, but the problem is getting adsense back up because the blasted pagination that I can't get rid of!

Hi Wendy! Flippa was spun out of SitePoint Marketplace about three and a half years ago.

Without seeing your site it's difficult to say, but it sounds like you'd be able to make up the $29 listing fee quite easily.
