I'm trying to master the WP game. I've done several posts on my website. However, i'm not sure if I should add "tags" to each post or not.

I understand what "tags" are but I don't want them showing up the pages.

Should I add them or not?

I've already installed the all in one SEO pack and I put the tags, etc in there.

Thanks to fellow warriors for showing me some love!

Yes... you should add keyword tags to each of your posts.

Thanks for the response, Jay. Is there a button to toggle or something so that the tags don't appear on the page of the post?

You need to edit this in your theme... removing the code that pulls the tags... but why would you want to?

If you don't want them to show, don't add them but they are a must on all my content.

      Peace

      Jay

p.s. The above is just my opinion based on using wordpress for a long time, it doesn't mean it is set in stone.. test

I love using tags these days too, particularly for large content sites. If I have 500 posts in a medium sized niche, then the categories help me break that down into the smaller sub-niches. Tags however, allow me to target specific long tail related aspects of that same content. And that of course gives you many related keywords on each post, plus it creates additional keyword rich pages on your site.

I tend to use tags on any site which I intend to eventually have more than 10 posts on.

I'm also testing a mis-spelled words approach using tags. I tag something with the proper spelling of the long tail/tiny niche, then I'll also tag it with 3-5 spelling variations that people use when searching that topic.

Tags are wonderful and it is a part of SEO.

I love tags as when I am searching for some products or services, the words in Tags appearing and it will be likely to be what I am searching for. I love it as it always shows what I was searching for.

You must try and optimize your tags so that it will be related to whatever your post is about. That way, when someone searches and the tags will show what they are looking for.

I would also recommend using tags, primarily as a part of SEO and getting your page to rank. If you feel like they are cluttering up your site, you should be able to edit them out of the php files your your theme (try index.php to start, and look for post enumeration).

You should definitely add tags, all the blog sites create pages for various tags that get in the SERPS and your page will appear in them. I suggest using a tag cloud creator and using the text from your post.

You should place some tags. It's not that big to disrupt your posts anyway right?

It actually helps your blog and others to make it easier to look for things that your blog can show or your post provides. Unless you intend not to let others read your posts which I guess is not the case.

I find it interesting that people suggest they help your readers to find stuff.

In all my web browsing, I would never use tags to find something on a blog.

On a occasion I may use a category to look for something, but if it's a specific word I'm after, I'll just use the search bar.

There is no conclusive evidence that tags significantly benefit SEO.

As a structure for helping people find your content, tags FAIL!

It's total analysis paralysis!! Give people fewer options, and they'll be happier.

    Just another perspective.

Oh, and last time I checked, top bloggers like Darren Rowse, Brian Clarke, etc didn't bother with them.

    Later!

That is just you - I regularly use tags to find relevant posts. So now we have a 50/50 split of people who do and don't use tags... Not that it means anything, everybody has their own preferences.

There is no conclusive proof tag pages don't benefit SEO - internal linking from tag pages can help with SEO - tag pages can help channel PR to other pages.

How so? Surely your blog stats will show whether your tag pages are being used to find content.

Darren Rowse does use tags - go to problogger.net and type ?tag=wordpress at the end of the url - you'll be taken to a page of posts tagged with the term wordpress... He just doesn't display any tags on his blogs - that is where you are correct in saying "Give people fewer options" but not because it'll make them happier, it gives you more control over where your visitors can go on your blog.

I also suspect that he doesn't display links to tag pages to stop the search engines from indexing them - he would far rather have the search results display content from each post (which he has some control over) rather than display snippets from a tag page (which he has no control over).

    Hey SoEasyMoney,

I advice you to add as much keywords as
you possibly can and the broader they will
    be the better.
Keywords or tags is what seach engines love
therefore in order for you to benefit from your
SEO pack, you definitely should add tags to your
    posts.
