Facebook local= Death of local business directories?

Recently Facebook announced its new venture as a local search engine. It will combine best features of all the local listing sites like yelp + interactive social features.

For example now you will be able to see local restaurants in your area based on the Likes and reviews of your connections.

So my question is will this new facebook app kill (city level) small scale business directories?

I wouldn't go that far. It definitely heats up the competition and pushes smaller directories to step their game up and offer deeper content.

Facebook and Bing have been building this for the last 3 years. Bing local couldnt compete with Google Places and Microsoft took their time and did it right. Now Google+ is a ghost town and half the businesses who claimed a page need to reverify. Google opened this Pandora's Box when they didnt bring anything new when they decided to jump into the social network market. Facebook will eventually gobble up alot of the smaller business directories. Just look at whove they paired with Bing, Yelp and Foursquare - all use Bing maps - its smart and thats why Facebook HAS to be the #1 agenda on all local businesses lists... I map out how in a recent article:

Businesses need to use FB as a Social CRM and connect with current customers to build new customers... this newest development is still rooted in what FB is thats why its only going to make them stronger.

    Great comment AdappMedia.

I totally agree. FB dilutes Googles grip on this significantly.

Lately I've been impressed with some of Microsofts latest innovations. They've finally stepped up to the plate in a number of areas and become competitive again.

Awesome, and watch out Google Local because Facebook is here to compete in a fierce market. Of course they will have to do a great job to make Google and other big player worry about it.

Must have missed something? Google has been doing this since 1999 and FB is wasting it's time doing it, as everything is already on Google?

Might be some way of making $ out of it, but local niche directories are just that, most people do not think that the reviewers [unless verified] on Y8lp etc etc are real, so why would you think anything on FB is real?

There is loads of $$$$ to make with on niche, highly researched directory sites, FB is just jumping on a another wagon to try and make up for the 56billion it has lot in paper value this year
