Internet Marketers selling your site?

Hey

I'm still a newbie here but have an interesting question.

Internet marketing can be a lot about the individual selling the product. In other word's its your story customers are buying into.

BUT

Let's say you build a huge list and make good money. Then for whatever reason you want out. Are the chances of you selling it small?.

Also has anyone done this. e.g built a business around themselves, their story and sold it?

It's kinda like virgin and Richard Branson, if he left or was bought over by someone the company's value would drop?

Same as Steve Job's and apple. I know he died but if he was still alive and say bill gates bought apple the value would depreciate?

Weird question.. i know, but has anyone done this?

People will buy a legit list. They might need to send trial ads to see if it is a legit list. The factors affecting price will be: location of list members, open rates, and how fresh the list is.

Selling a website is realistic but selling a list is not.

The reason is because your subscribers opted in because of something that YOU offered them right.

They didn't opt in with the knowledge of your intention to sell that list to someone that they have zero relationship with them who will then attempt (and fail) to market to them.

Also I'm sure anyone selling a list would not have notified their subscribers that they will be "passed off" to someone else.

It just doesn't work that way and any one that knows their stuff would not even consider buying it.

That's not the case at all. A list is a business asset, and can be sold as such. Happens all the time.

        Yeah really where?

Is there a marketplace online that provides a platform for people to buy and sell their lists because if so I have never heard of it.

Even if someone was to sell their list it is not ethical or effective.

Who wants to subscribe to a list that is going to be sold?

            Good point.

Technically that would be a website that has a list as part of the business' assets not usually an IM list that someone is trying to onsell but nevertheless you are right about that.

Its interesting that I am having this conversation because a few months ago I was the one telling stating that you can sell your list being that it is an asset etc etc and they were the ones stating that its not a very effective avenue to go down.

A list that is a part of a site that is run by the sites "admin" would be much more feasible.

The point I was trying to make (which has been pointed out countless times on the forum) is that if your list is branded to you (which most are) it is very difficult to transfer that over to someone else just for the simple reason that when subscribers start receiving emails from someone that they don't know they will not have the same credibility or effectiveness.

          Hi:

What I think is that it depends on the deal of the business at the time it was sold. There has to have a clear deal what is included and what's not included at the time of the sale. If it was a deal to sell everything including the existing customer's lists then it is very legitimate to sell the business including the lists.

The list is an important asset for any company which they would not want to miss when they buy any new company.

Ever gotten junk emails? Where do you think they got your email address from?

    Lists can definitely be sold.

True enough Oliver. In the IM niche, we mostly think of it as
"being on this or that marketer's list."

Outside of IM though, much more common that the emails would be
associated with a company, brand name, what-have-you. The people on the
list probably wouldn't even know their emails were sold in that case.

It really depends on what you site would be valued and proof that there was a constant source of income from your lists. Some people are lazy and want to buy a site and list with working for it.
