How do you search for sites to advertise on?

When you search for sites to advertise on directly and not through an ad network, what keywords do you use to search?

advertise with us
advertisers
your ad here

Got any common ones to add to the list?

    I don't personally search like that. Here's what I do -

    1. Research sites in whatever niche (like 20 or so)
    2. Identify the demographic (an average demographic if you're in a "wide-range" niche)
    3. Look through my researched sites and weed out the ones the demo does not match
    4. Look for ones that have good activity on them
    5. Contact directly to try and setup some advertising

That's basically a nutshelled version of what I, and I'm sure many others, do. It's a little more intensive work that Googling "advertising" or what have you, but then again, IM IS work.

Usually how much do you pay on monthly basis for each site? Do the site owners readily agree to add your banner on their website? Do you get conversions with this kind of direct buying of ad slots?

I'll try to answer your questions here -

        1. It varies, I've found some for incredibly cheap and some upwards of $75 a month.

        2. I personally have yet to come across a site owner who has not agreed to place my ad for a fee. There may be some out there though.

        3. I have gotten great conversions with this kind of ad buying, but it's not necessarily the buying that converts. It's the spot, the ad itself, the target etc. So a lot more than just this type of buying is involved in conversions. I've done terrible as well, that's why I always test test test.

Thanks for the detailed answer. Much appreciated. I will have to test this kind of advertising.

While contacting the site owner, do I make a price offer or ask him to quote the price?

Other than searching on Google, another good way is to go check out the blog & web directories out there. Sites are organised there according to niches, so it won't be difficult to find a few winners there. And believe me this works.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I need to clarify what I am looking for a bit.

Many sites will have a page that contains all the information about advertising on the site. They usually link to that page in the footer.

What I am trying to find out is what link text is being used to link to the advertising page.

Hope that explains it a little better.

I typically don't search for those sites because it usually means a high ad rate. As said above there's a few different things you can add on to your search to try and nail down those links. However I don't know how many sites will be that easy to Google. And as also stated above, don't rule any sites out until you research them yourself.

Again, I don't search like this so I'm not 100%

I use Quantcast to determine where my market spends time. Then I go to those sites and look for the "advertise" link which is usually in the footer. Then I send an email asking for a test buy.

If you think it more attractive way I think "Get Traffic" "Get Leads" or "Promote your site" or may be such other attracting text links can be useful.

    You can add

    Advertising rates
    Rate card
    Media Kit

Also, don't disqualify a site because you notice an ad network loading. Some of the publishers I know use the networks to fill in unsold space, and are very open to individual placements. You can find out for sure for the price of an email...

I go to alexa and find the top 100 sites related to the product or offer i'm selling paste them into note book then head or to quancast and check the demographics to see if they match with what i'm selling then head to each site and and ask them how can i advertise on the site. if they use ad networks try to see if they will trade a ad space for you for a fixed priced.

For the niche , i will direct use the specific keywords that wish to target
while those sites provide more quality traffic to you because it related content.

I also use google adwords placement ads to find out all my niche to target .

Beside that the last tools i use is alexa ranking where i find out all top site with the country and keywords and email them and request for advertise purpose.

Look for similar blogs in your niche.

I did know of a tool that did help you find similar blogs.

Google your niche "keywords" and find similar blogs to advertise on.

Just make sure to have close "eye" on them and edit them for better results.

You can also check message boards that allow advertisements. Forum directories are a great places to do this as well.
