How do I track my site activity? Is Google Analytics good enough?

I need to get more information about the visitors to my sites but I don't know that Google Analytics is going to give me enough information.

I want to know how many daily visitors and where they've come from, but I also want to know what they do when they get there and where they end up.

Is there one solution that gives a full picture of this or do I have to use a number of different solutions?

I'd really appreciate your advice...

Thanks heaps!

Google analytics is a fantastic site tracking tool.. also Statcounter offer a great free service too..

I don't know how in-depth you want to go, but these two provide a massive number of details about your site visitors and actions.

I have heard from several people that Clicktale is great. It records what your visitor does from the time they get to your site to the time they leave. You can google record website visitors and get other results as well.

Yes, clicktale is great to track visitor activity on your website, the areas people spend more time on (on a particular webpage), where they click, etc. The free account is also pretty good, except that you cannot record all your visitors (only a limited number in a given period), however the free one is the place you should start to gather quick data on your webpages and your visitors movements.

I use google analytics and love it.

I especially like how I can email my stats to myself and print so I have a record of the visits and where they were from.

Helps to see that my sites are being visited thru each other.

I don't think that you are going to find anything better than statcounter or google analytics. I stick with those 2 if I were you

Most statistics programs give the webmaster a good aggregate view of what their traffic is doing. If you want to see individual (or aggregate) analysis of what paths people take through your site, you might like phptraffica or tracewatch.

While it may not have as many features and capabilities, 'host' based tracking such as Awstats can have a big advantage over something like Google Analytics.

Too many users have privacy software nowadays that block JS like Google analytics...not to mention users that run plugins like /noscript for Firefox.

There are a few stats analysis programs that can give some extremely accurate statistics based on raw weblogs, but of course they have some limitations on features and what they can actually tell you, but for some stats, they are far more accurate than any 3rd party tool.

That's really intereting - I know my privacy software is likely to block Analytics, that's something I've been wondering. I'll definitely check this out some more.
