400-600 is typically a good length for a press release IMO.

The title is most important. Make sure it is catchy.
500-800 words are more than enough. Sharp content is the key.

Anything from 150 to 250+ words goes fine, press release is not like article submission.

So long as you get the word out and pass the message across professionally you are good to go.

As with all writing, but even more so in press releases, you need to consider your target audience. Best practices suggest the following guidelines for not only your targeted market, but more importantly to score with journalists for publishing:

      * Use catchy headlines, keeping them at about 8-10 words
      * A body length of 300-500 words is optimal. Anything less may not provide adequate information, and any more may be not be picked up by publishers.
      * Use bullet points to divide your paragraphs and keep paragraphs to 3- 4 sentences.
      * Use descriptive, vibrant words without appearing to be a hyperbolic sales pitch.
      * Include contact information and a "non-salesy" call to action.

Although press releases are different in structure, they are similar to article syndication in the sense that you must catch the editor/reporters' eye as well as be appealing to your targeted reading audience.
