You can host a server from your PC,althoug Linux is better.
There are a lot of free softwares which offers you hosting on your own computer although the website will be slower and so as your computer and of course you need to run your computer 24/7 or it will effect your ranking.

Yes you can do it although you will need to run your computer 24/7 and it won'tbe cheap.

No, actually it's not that simple.

You have to install a server to be able to run PHP scripts and Mysql. Now, most people will have a tough time configuring the server... not to mention debug it when there are problems.

And that's only part of it. Most IPs are not directly accessible from all over the internet, only in the local network. The real IP is on a router that may or may not be accessible to you (and believe it or not that's a good thing).

When you have a real IP address you have to deal with a lot of hackers trying to brute force their way into your PC, exploiting every operating system loophole .. and every common software you have installed.

So yeah, your own PC and having a website on it? Probably the worst idea ever, unless you're a Linux administrator and you really know what you're doing.

I think you've perhaps tried to simplify that process a little too much.

Learning how to host your own site is a task within itself and a lot more hassle than just buying hosting which I usually cheap.

There is also the problem that most residential ISPs issue dynamic IP addresses which will cause you all sorts of trouble. It can be done but not recommended for most, especially those unfamiliar with networking.

You should setup a few external monitors that monitor the uptime of your external IP. Most people have no idea the amount of latency and drops from soho internet connections. Anyone with knowledge of configuring IPSEC VPN's utilizing sessions on even something like a 30X5 TW Telecom "business" connection knows what I'm talking about.

Probably best to leave it to the professionals. Security wise, they invest millions to avoid attacks from hackers and the like, as an individual you will find it difficult to secure your sever to the extent that you need to

Hosting packages are so cheap now and saves all the hassle of things going wrong that you can't sort out of you aren't techie.

Setting up your own hosting on a Linux box to run from home is easier than you think. The real problems are 1) Most ISPs do not allow you to run your own web server from home 2) Most ISPs don't give you enough Upload bandwidth. If you have 15Mbs down and 1Mbs up, then your visitors are limited to 1Mbs download speeds. Good luck trying to serve many people if your site takes off or if you have a lot of images on your website.

I setup local websites on my Linux box for development purposes only. With hosting being so cheap, it's worth my time and resources to pay $3-5 per month for somebody else to host.

Also, take into account that your IP address is not constant and ISPs can change it whenever they want or you should pay them 3-5$ a month for a static IP.

Honestly, this is the most idiotic advice given to present or would-be WP blog owners... :rolleyes:

My computer is usually on all the time; I do have XAMPP installed on it (Apache, MySQL, PHP etc.) to locally test themes, plugins and all kind of scripts - but I would never ever would want to use it as my web server.

I totally agree.

Even as non-Wordpress user, myself, I could see that this was one of the most idiotic posts we've ever had here.

Apparently there just isn't a way to stop this guy from littering the forum with ludicrous nonsense. He makes 30-40 posts per day; most are deeply misguided (to be polite) and some are just crazy. Apparently he never reads the replies to them, either, because he keeps churning out exactly the same ill-informed and misleading nonsense over and over and over again. I do what I can but I seem to be the only one reporting his posts (and even that doesn't necessarily help the moderators anyway, because it's not trivially obvious where each individual post he makes is in itself a breach of the rules, and I understand and accept that: the overall situation with his posts, though, is clearly a ridiculous one, in my opinion).

actually, i suppose if someone were very cheap they could do this..

it's not really that difficult to install the AMP stack on windows (i have XAMPP on numerous windows pc's for development purposes), and the IP address is easily fixed with with a free dynamic dns service that updates automatically when your pc changes it's IP.

but as others pointed out - you can get hosting for as low a 1.99 per month, w/o the crappy upload speeds you'll get from your ISP, so why bother? Not to mention back-up generators, etc..

It has nothing to do with rankings...

It all comes down to having the expertise and ability of doing it the right way. So it is :

1. Working
2. Performing and scalable
3. Secure

Doing it on your PC, isn't considered as a good practice even if its done properly. That doesnt mean that you cant run your own server at home. Though, having a hosting account just to run a website sometimes saves lots of headache.

I know I already posted on this, but this thread cracks me up..

what the OP said is certainly doable, and not terribly difficult to do.

I know plenty of people who run their own servers from their house, particularly gamers. My son ran a game server for him and his friends from his bedroom last year when he was in middle school.

I just can't see why someone wouldn't just pay the few bucks in hosting if all they wanted was WP - particularly when they some how manage to afford the internet connection and pc.

This guy has made a lot of spammy posts recently, which I have flagged - but I think he's getting clobbered on this one more then he deserves.
