Question about Buying a new domain name

I have both Godaddy and Hostgator servers. Can I buy a domain at the godaddy .99 cents and then point the domain to my hostgator server.

From my last attempt, I had to pay hostgator $15 to transfer the domain from godaddy to them. Can I just go into my panel on godaddy and change the DNS information to my hostgator server?

Yes, of course, it's very simple, here's how to do it: Setting Nameservers for Your Domain Names | Go Daddy Help | Go Daddy Support

That's what I did. One of my sites is with Bluehost which is the same as Hostgator. I pointed the domain I had from Godaddy to Bluehost and it didn't cost anything.

You can buy a domain at godaddy and host it on gator all differently.

You will be charged for only yearly domain fees from godaddy and monthly hosting fees from gator.

The reason why gator charged you $15 for domain transfer was because you domain was with godaddy and you wanted your domain to domicile with gator. That means your yearly domain will now be charged by Hostgator and not godaddy again. Thou you could have waited for your domain to be close to expiration before requesting the transfer and you will get a free renewal and only pay for the transfer, anyway it cost nothing.

Note, you will not be charged for pointing your nameserver to gator.

where I get confused when setting the nameserver is folder directory. How do I point the nameserver to a specific folder on the hostgator server. Hostgator says you can host unlimited domains. If I just point it to the nameserver for hostgator, isnt that the main folder which is a separate domain.

Rather then setting the nameserver you can just update the advanced DNS on GoDaddy's manage your domain control panel to point to your hostgator server.

Let me know if you need assistance doing this as it takes seconds to do and it's FREE!

What nameservers did you setup and what is your domain? From this I should be able to tell you if your domain is working correctly on the nameservers.

Hostgator also provide amazing support for this sort of stuff so might be worth giving them a support ticket with what you've done.

You do not have to pay a single cent. Just add your domain name after registering with Hostgator, or use the add-on domain feature of your Cpanel.

    Yes.

Yes, you would. But transferring the domain-name isn't what you want to do. That makes Hostgator both your registrar and your host (undesirable). "Transferring" a domain means "changing who the registrar is".

Yes. This is exactly what you should do.
