The bare bones of internet marketing

Hey there,

im a marketing graduate who knows very little about internet marketing ( thanks uni ) but have reading alot recently.

What i have read so far is that internet marketing can be incredibly rewarding both on a personal and monetary level.

i have some simple questions but extreamly noobish at the same time.

- Do you need to understad HTML and use something like dreamweaver to set up your website of value?

- i understand that once the email list has been built up you can start making money through this, but im not sure how this works exactly, would you sell the right for other companies to promote there product through your list ext?

- in terms of adverts on your site how do you sort out the pay per click feature, for example on a sight about cars do you go to the company and ask them if they want to advertise on your site, how do you go about sorting this out?
How do you go about making sure you get payed the price per click eg if it was 20 cents per click. How can this be monitored.

- what are the other best ways to use your mail list to make money?

Sorry for the extreamly noobish questions i have literally just started my journey on internet marketing and sometimes take a rhino approach to things, wanting to know everything all at once!!!

thanks x

No, you don't need to use a specific package to create a website. If you want to take the time to climb the learning curve, Dreamweaver is a powerful application. Many people have a CMS (Content Management System) that they favor. Wordpress is probably the most popular.

While it's possible to outsource all programming and web design and maintenance, having at least a rudimentary understanding of HTML can come in handy, as it allows you to make minor edits or changes without waiting for a contractor to get to it.

Sending advertising is one way to make money with a list. Others will send a combination of valuable content and product recommendations to their list members, either profiting from the product sales directly (in the case of a product they own) or collecting a commission for making the referral.

Until you reach a large volume of impressions, it's often best to work with an ad network. Google Adsense is probably the best known. Once accepted into the program, you get a snippet of code to embed in your pages. When the page loads, the code calls the network server and retrieves the ads to display and tracks any clicks.

If you choose to run your own ad server, the manual for the software will explain the tracking mechanisms available.

For many, especially those just starting out, the content+promotion method mentioned above allows you the time to build and refine your list management and communication skills, while offering the possibility of commissions paid. Properly nurtured, such a list can find some of the members making mulitple purchases over their lifetime on the list.

Sending paid ads for anything and everything can generate income, but the practice tends to burn out list members fairly quickly. Ongoing income relies on being able to replace those list members with new ones. The method has been dubbed 'churn and burn' for a reason. To be fair, some people have skill in genrating subscribers and very little in communicating with a list on an ongoing basis. Churn and Burn may serve them well, as long as they understand the limitiations.

Brings up a good point...why the he** aren't they teaching marketing grads today about the internet?? Just saying...

What i have read so far is that internet marketing can be incredibly rewarding both on a personal and monetary level.

I look at it like it's THE place that more and more people go to buy stuff, so you gotta be there!

i have some simple questions but extreamly noobish at the same time.

    - Do you need to understad HTML and use something like dreamweaver to set up your website of value?

Nope - Tumblr, Wordpress, are two examples of tools you can use to launch your own site TODAY without knowing a lick of html. If you ever do need to know how to do something in HTML there are TONS of free tutorial sites where you simply need to Google what you are trying to do and you will get the answer fast.

    - i understand that once the email list has been built up you can start making money through this, but im not sure how this works exactly, would you sell the right for other companies to promote there product through your list ext?

First, you want to pick a niche market that a) Interests you (hopefully that you are passionate about) and b) Where you see things selling (either information like books, magazines, courses, etc... or physical stuff like Yoga where yoga wear, clothes, mats, etc... are big sellers)

Second, you want to build a community around you, your company and your marketplace...this can (and should) be done through blogging, videos, list building, social networking (Twitter, Facebook), etc...

Third, you want to recommend stuff that this community wants...this can be other people's stuff (where you get paid as an affiliate) or your own stuff (where you offer your expertise or service in exchange for dollars) - ideally you eventually offer both.

If (and a BIG IF) you want to use advertising as your monetization method then you have some choices, you can do it yourself, hussle to find ad sponsors who pay you a fixed rate (so much per month is most common blogs) or you can do Adwords or a per-click ad monetization where you belong to a network in which case they monitor the clicks and price paid to you...typically a floating amount depending on the ad network.

    - what are the other best ways to use your mail list to make money?

First, you want to build a passionate list of followers, assuming you know what business you are in, what your market is - you will know what to sell them.

Sorry for the extreamly noobish questions i have literally just started my journey on internet marketing and sometimes take a rhino approach to things, wanting to know everything all at once!!!

    thanks x

Take a look at creating info products, it probably one of the easier ways to get yourself into IM. Ask yourself, do you have a particular hobby or interest that takes up a lot of your time, are you particularly knowledgeable in it. You dont necessarily have to be an expert in it, as you can research topics to get a better grounding.

Then put your product together, and your first product is in your hands. Once you have that done, you will move onto doing the dirty work online, most people suggest creating your site on Wordpress, spend some time reading on here and it will come to you in a week or two. Good luck buddy

I'll try to answer your questions as well as I can:

        1. Nope. While it may help to know some basic html, css or even PHP for customizing a website the way you like it there is no need to really be an expert. Most people will simply use Wordpres because it is so incredibly easy to use and you can set up a really killer looking website in no time. Failing that, many people just hire someone to do it for them.

        2. Keep in mind that the list is based around a specific niche. Let's say it's "Weight Loss". You need to do a good bit of research to find a great product to promote. One which is professionally presented, selling rather well, has a low refund rate and is relevant to your niche. Then you just send out an email to your list telling them about how great the product is.

People read the email, click the link, buy the product and you get a percentage of the sale. Extrapolate this over say 1,000 people and you can see how much money can be made IN THEORY.

        3. Most people simply use Google if they're going to be looking to make money from PPC. It's really easy to join, a breeze to set up and quite profitable for some. PPC success really depends on picking a good niche, optimal ad placement and a high volume of traffic. There are, of course, other PPC networks which are sometimes harder to get into. The first step in PPC, however, is making a great site and then driving as much traffic as possible to it. Don't just throw PPC ads on it the first day.

In terms of getting paid, Google handles that. The advertisers have already paid their money.

        4. The best way to make money from your mailing list is to create your own killer product. It does, of course, need to be relevant to your niche, should be well presented and should provide value for the customers. Creating your own product is the best way to go simply because you are the only one selling it. You can also allow affiliates to promote it for you which can greatly increase your sales figures if everything else is done properly.

My advice to you is to read, read more, keep reading, watch some videos, read more. It's important to figure out what is BS information and what is legit. Marketing has a huge cloud of BS surrounding it most times and many people have a hard time seeing through it. Even some things which seem to be commonly accepted practices, such as buying Likes and Followers, can actually be rather worthless.

With all those questions and thinking that far ahead (one of the mistakes I made which held me back), you're going to get information overload. You won't know which way to go or how to start. My advice is to take it one step at a time. I just recently wrote something about this because it can hold people back! My advice would be to get a domain name and get a site going with wordpress. Take it one step at a time.

    Hi there!

There is so much to learn about internet marketing, but if you want to learn HTML and different languages, here is a free source that offers tutorials:

    HTML Tutorial

I would encourage you to go to IM Report Card or a site like that where you
can get reviews on courses that will mentor you. Chris Farrell is the best in my opinion to get you started.

    Hope this helps,

I agree with what was mentioned above as well. Building a list is the best method of building a long term business online though in my opinion.

One thing to remember about list building is that its not the size of your list but the RELATIONSHIP with your list. There are marketers out there making multiple 6 figures with a list of less than 2000 people.

You are going to read a lot of posts on this forum of people flaunting their list size and crap when that is not the key.

Those who have built huge businesses with email marketing, they are successful because they offer lots of value and help their subscribers solve their problems and get them results FIRST before they promote anything to them. You NEVER want to allow the itch for quick profits to cause you to start hammering your list with offers day after day. You just won't last long doing that.

Hey, your questions are the ones we've all asked ourselves so don't feel embarrassed, that's what the forum is for.

Firstly to answer your question about HTML and whether you need to understand it, the simple answer is no.

You can have a website setup and running in under 30 mins using Wordpress. You have probably heard of Wordpress, it's easily the most popular blogging platform and is very versatile and easy to post comments on and upload images etc.

I built my blog using Wordpress, click on my link below and check it out. It's basic, but it still has all the functionality you will need. If your hosting company uses Cpanel, you can install Wordpress on your domain with a one click install. In Cpanel, you will see an icon called 'Fantastico deluxe'. This is where you install Wordpress. Youtube will have a ton of vids showing you how, if you get stuck.

Your second question, regarding list building and using your list to make money is something that will take time to build up.

You will need to develop a relationship with your subscribers so they trust you and see you as somebody who provides value. You can start to build your subscriber list by installing an opt-in web form on your Blog, give them something of value, for free, such as a report, ebook, piece of software etc, in exchange for their name and email. You will need an autoresponder for this, such as Aweber or getresponse. I use Aweber.

When you start to build your list, you can start to develop a relationship with them too. Don't hammer them with every affiliate promotion you can find or you will burn them out and they will unsubscribe pretty quickly. Try to provide them with valuable content and solutions to their problems. They will respect you for this and be more likely to buy from you in the future.

As far as monetizing your site is concerned, there are a number of ways you can do it.

You can put affiliate banners on your Blog. I have affiliate banners for Aweber, Bluehost and Market samurai. If anybody clicks the banner and goes on to buy the product or sign up for the service, I get a commission.

You can write a review post about a certain item of software or product and put affiliate links in the text.

If you have a niche site such as Fishing tackle, Golf tips Or Dog training for example you can have Google Adsense on your site. Adsense will display relevant ads on your site and you get paid every time a visitor clicks on one of those ads. Again, there are hundreds of videos on youtube etc, which will guide you through that.

I have to say, if you are just starting out, the best piece of advice I think any body will give you is, find a mentor.

Join a training program or a membership site and learn the ropes. It's quite easy to get lost and confused if you don't have any direction or a plan laid out. It will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

I hope this helps. Good luck. ;-)

    No.

My guess is that a fairly high proportion of successful Warriors have some understanding of HTML (though I don't, at all), but that very few use Dreamweaver or anything so complicated or powerful. Many use Wordpress, and I don't do that, either.

It's one way. I wouldn't, myself, because that devalues the list, generally.

It's not the list itself that's worth money: it's your relationships with your subscribers and the fact that they trust and respect you, and think of you as a "provider of valued information" who happens intermittently (and for reasons they understand and accept because you discuss it very openly with them) to promote some stuff as well, and your recommendations are always worth listening to and taking seriously because (i) you're the person making them, and (ii) they've always been pleased before, every single time they've bought something on your suggestion (most of the money's in the "repeat sales").

I don't have other people's advertising on my sites.

    Wouldn't dream of it.

That would detract from my main purposes in having the sites and attracting traffic to them in the first place.

You did very well indeed to attract a reply (above) from John McCabe. You could do a lot worse than click on his profile and gradually read all his previous posts. There's a whole education there and it's an unusually good one (as well as extraordinarily generously-spirited, well-mannered and at times strikingly tactful). I'm "just saying".

    1. Yes, you need some knowledge abot html and DW, and Lynda.com will help you.
    2. You need a list to sustain the biz, and Getsubscribers.com and Getresponse.com will help you.
    3. You will monetizate your site using Adsense.
    4. You should use PLR content from Resell-Rights-Weekly.com to build the list.

You don't need to understand HTML in order
to create a website. A large number of site owners
use Wordpress platform to create and manage site
    very easily.

In my opinion you need to focus primarily on building
an email list. The purpose of any new site is in building
    an email list.
You can think about putting advertiser's links on your site
latter when you have a decent subscribers base.
