I am almost done with my ebook and I may need to copyright it. Besides copywriting and converting it to a PDF file, is there anything else I have to do before I launch it?

You do not need to copyright it. It's automatically copyrighted via international copyright laws. As long as you are not plagiarizing or using public domain work, IT IS YOUR OWN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY.

Source: Me (I have many ebooks and am a copywriter [the latter part is a joke])

You can write the disclaimer inside the report and also state that this ebook is yours...hope this helps

That's good and all, but if someone's going to steal your material, there's nothing stopping them from editing your copyright disclaimer.

Anyway, a disclaimer doesn't do anything other than remind. The work is copyrighted as soon as its published.

You can never stop theft, but its worthwhile adding the disclaimer.

I also include this in my footers.

    Congratulate to your new ebook.
I understand your concern on the copyright issue.
There are lot of unethical people ready to exploit your hard work.
There is only so. Much we can do to prevent this.

My suggestion: do a good marketing promotion to sell as much copies as possible.
Move on from there to your next ebook.

Ok, I put in the disclaimer above. Is there anything else I need to do? I put my name and the name of the book in a title page.

Run off two copies. Take them to a Notary Public and have it certified. Mail the other one back to yourself certified mail and don't open it. If anything ever comes up in court, you have proof via the dates that it's your book - or at least it isn't the thief's.

Also, my book title is 6 words long. It really is necessary to explain what the book is all about. I looked around and I see a few other books with a 6 word title. Is this appropriate?

Way to go on the new ebook. With all the advise above, all you have to do is comply, add your legal disclaimer and convert it to pdf and you are all set to go.

Like everyone else has said, your work is automatically copyrighted as soon as you publish it.

BUT, if you want to sue for damages (at least in the US… not sure about other countries), you should be registering it with the US copyright office at U.S. Copyright Office. It will cost $35.

Thanks! I am going to now convert to PDF and sign up for the $35 copyright. I will then sell it.

    Thanks!

It's copyrighted when you create it. Registering it with the fee gives you additional rights and remedies if it is copied.

    I wouldn't just copy some "disclaimer" -

    - A disclaimer is different from copyright. With a disclaimer you are "disclaiming" certain obligations. With copyright you are claiming them. They are different concepts.

    - The disclaimer in this thread may be entirely irrelevant to your product and not cover important issues you want or should disclaim.

    - Statements like:

While every effort has been made by the author and all associated contributors to present accurate and up to date information within this document
Create potential liability by imposing an unnecessary promises by you to ensure you have made "every effort" to have "accurate" and "up to date" information.

    Maybe true. Maybe not.

    Do you have "associated contributors"?

I can't speak for John, but when he said put this on the first page of your ebook, he likely meant: Here is a starting point for something you can modify and put in your ebook.

I'm not an attorney but from my understanding you still need to register if you want to file a lawsuit. Your work is protected without registration but you have to register to recover statutory damages (and attorney fees). I think you have to do this shortly after the publication.

So basically you can ask people to stop, but if you want to get some $ that they potentially siphoned off from your profits, you need to have proper registration.
