Amazon Secret Key

I recently bought a few made to order Amazon sites from the WSO area - the developer is requesting the Amazon Secret Key along with the Amazon API key etc.

I know that the API key is needed, but do I also have to supply the Secret key.

Any help on this is appreciated.

    Sign in to Amazon Web Services (you need to have an account): Amazon Web Services, Cloud Computing: Compute, Storage, Database
    Once there go to Security Credentials under account on the left hand side of the home page.

    Scroll down to Access Credentials and generate a Key Pair.

    Amazon's suggests you keep your access codes confidential. So you may want to ask the developer where you can input your codes.

    Yeah ... he most likely won't be able to get the site to do as it is supposed to without the secret key.

      You need the secret key to use certain Amazon APIs (programming interfaces). So if a website uses these APIs to function, then the person who sets up the website needs the secret key.

      The problem with giving the secret key to others, is however that it can also be used to run-up chargeable Amazon services through the APIs,

      So you better really trust whoever you give the key, (a) not to misuse, and (b) to really keep it secure and secret from others.

      If you're buying a script or something, you ought to put the secret key in yourself when installing it. If you host the script yourself, there's no reason the script author needs your secret key.

        when everyone says the Amazon API Key in AWS Amazon there is not API Key there is only ACCESS KEY ID and the Secret Access Key... so I am assuming the API Key is the Access Key ID???

    If you do not want to give it to him then you can ask for instructions on how to put it in yourself.

    I think I know the product you are talking about and if it is the same one then you have nothing to worry about. Once everything is set up just change all your passwords and you will be fine

    All - thanks for the info. The dev cannot use the API without the key. I think I have to give it out. As mentioned above, will change the password once everything is done.

      How will changing the password help if the developer keeps a copy of your secret key and uses it elsewhere. Not to say he or she would just curious.

    There's a reason why secret key has "secret" in the name.

    Giving it out is exactly like giving out one of your passwords ( one that allows people to charge things in your name). Do not give it out unless you truly trust the recipient not to misuse it, and to take at least as good care of it as you would yourself.

    it is needed for the purpose you want it but it is not wise to share it (or else it wouldn't be called secret key). i strongly suggest you to get step-by-step guidance on how to do it yourself or find a mate that you can trust to do it
