Listbuilding in smaller niches

I've been looking into building a list that's not in the usual niches of IM, dating, or weight loss, but then I always get stuck on how I'd be monetising it.

Usually there are only a handful of Clickbank products with (close to) 0 gravity, and they're probably a rip-off anyways (I'd like to maintain a good relationship with my list, which doesn't involve selling them crap).

Then there are the physical items, but these have very low commissions (mostly around 10%), and I'm not sure they'd convert too well (ecommerce layout vs. a long sales letter).

Is having my own product the only viable option in a scenario like this? Or am I missing something here?

And on a related note, do you usually only promote digital goods/info products to your lists?

Time to create your own products. Start slow and easy with specialized supplier lists or 'how to' ebooks. Specialized lists = less competition = possibly more money

You are making assumptions about the products with no real proof. You are looking to fail before you even get started.

There are products for the niche. Do a search on Google. Are there ads for products? How do those companies monetize?

These are signs that there is money in the niche.

And since it is not in the "big 3", there is less competetion, and more of an opportunity for you to be the authority.

Sounds like a winner to me.

Having your won product is always batter than promoting products created by others. If you have your won product you can have affiliates promote for you while you are making your next product.

Might it be easier to do it the other way round, and select your niches according to what there is for sale that you can promote?

Or, if not that, what about seeing what Google AdWords announcements there are for the niche's main keywords, what's for sale, who's selling what, how many different ads are there, how long are people advertising for, and the other basic research parameters which will tell you whether or not it's a commercially viable niche?

I regard that as potentially a big plus, when I'm selecting niches.

The words "a handful of products with single-figure gravities" actually describe my most successful niches, now I come to think about it!

"Interesting" perspective for an internet marketer?! You can somehow sense this without actually having seen any of them?

That will be up to you, won't it? If your relationship with your subscribers is such that they respect and trust you, and happily rely on the strength of your recommendations, that doesn't sound like a problem at all? There are certainly plenty of affiliates making a living from Amazon commissions smaller than 10%, aren't there?

    No.

Being an affiliate has many potential advantages over being a vendor. Here are just 10 of them: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7588476

Rather a lot, I think. It looks like almost everything you've said is based on assumptions and prejudices which very few people I know seem to share.

I would not even dream of going into any other niche without having my own product to sell

It's way more work and way less profitable because every sale you make you don't get the buyer the product owner does

When you're a complete newbie, sending traffic direct to a sales page and being just an affiliate is fine but you should be trying to create your own products as soon as you can :-)
