Is phplists the best self hosted autoresponder?

Hello,

I am looking for the most reliable autoresponder mail script (ideally in php) that I can install in my server (self hosted) and tweak to my won needs. For me it is important that the autoresponder service can manage a ver large list and amount of emails.

I arrived to the forum reading this thread, and that is exactly the kind of information I was looking for... but with the slight twist above (that has to be really scalable and customizable). This is why I opened a new thread.

I am building an application that will allow users to build their own site in my platform. It will be a site designed to capture leads, so it is very important that they have available an autoresponder to keep the relationship with these leads. I know I could build intengration with the main email autoresponders (aweber, etc), and I will do that... but i wanted to also offer my own email platform within the package (since a lot of the things that would go on the emails would be specifically the content that the site generates), so it seems that a custom solution that can automatically send these emails from within the application would be the best solution because it would integrate best. I would be using this application with Amazon SES or Sendgrid for high deliverability.

I have seen php list, which seems to be a great alternative... open source, php & customizable. However not long ago, a developer with expereince with phplists told me that Phplists is meant more for smaller email lists & does not work well for very large lists. He explained that there was a better alternative for that. He gave me the name but i cannot recall it. Do you agree with the above? I mean... do you agree that phplists does not work well for large email lists & many emails? Is there a better alternative? My site is in php, this is why I was looking for the autorespoder in php for best integration. Any comments or suggestions form your side would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

PHPList is not the best self-hosted autoresponder.

Your developer may have mentioned more a robust e-mail
marketing solution like Interspire Email Marketer.

I use an even better solution IMO (ActiveCampaign On-Site).

And you can create separate client accounts with that software
    too.

Thanks Shaun for the information! Those solutions you suggest, do you know if they can be customized and in php? I mean, I would need to integrate the code with mine, so that, for example, part of the content from the site... can be sent "automatically" through an email.. so i need to integrate well both platforms.

What i am seeing that may be difficult to solve is that each one of my customers (that has one of the sites i sell), would need to have a license (I guess), since each one would have its own list, which could end becoming a very high cost if I need to pay this for every client ... I would need to speak with them in this regard...

Regarding phplists... why do you think it may not be a good solution? Bad scalability? Other?

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but I bought this myself because it has SO MANY features, it's crazy!

That's not my affiliate link - it belongs to the JV Group where they spend time and I spend money because it seems like spending both isn't working for anyone.

The php code for the scripts is fully viewable and not
encrypted so you can modify it to suit your needs.

ActiveCampaign On-Site also has an API so that you
can insert and modify data relatively easy if you know
      what you're doing.

With the license, you can create a master account for
you and sub-accounts for your clients where they can
      send e-mails from your server.

In this case, they wouldn't need a separate license.

I never said that PHPList was not a good solution.

I said they are not the BEST solution.

PHPList is free code that's widely available.

I prefer to pay for a dedicated e-mail solution with
great support and more frequent updates and much
      greater functionality and performance.

Good thread. I've tried phplist before and found it a bit hard to use. I think it's time to give this a go again. Saving money on the bottom line!

Thanks thriftgirl62 for that link. That software will pay for itself in one month for me.

I just wanted to jump in here to avoid confusion that could come KennyTan's post above this one.

AutoResponse Plus has now been discontinued and replaced by arpReach.

There's a link in my signature, if needed.

    Cheers,
