Adding automatically to mailing list

Just a quick question as I am unsure on the answer This isn't something I am planning any time soon, however I noticed a feature in Aweber which allows you to add people directly to a mailing list upon a purchase. Now understandably people expect to be added if they purchase a product. However, what if they purchase a service? For example, if they clicked a payment link to pay for a graphic service and then automatically got added to a mailing list. Is this acceptable or generally frowned upon?

Im not too familiar with that even though i use the awber service, but i must say that if they are doing it, it must be honest and ethical. Aweber has a solid reputation and they would not jeopardize it by doing something inappropriate .

It was more whether people would 'like' it or simply stop purchasing services because you have automatically added them to a list as opposed to any problem on the part of Aweber.

This is the aweber page that speaks to your topic. Basically, clickbank (probably others also..) for example can redirect to an Aweber form post-sale that will let your customer opt-in if they choose.

Personally, I would not automatically add anybody without their permission. Sending a post sale thank you is one thing, but automatically adding to an auto responder is something I wouldn't do - probably because I myself wouldn't like it.

You want people on your list that want to be there. Adding them without their permission in my opinion, risks alienating them and flat out ticking them off. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

    Good Luck!

When customers BUY something, product or service, most WANT to hear from the source of that product or service. Especially concerning updates and news that benefit them.

What they generally DON'T like is buying something, then immediately and only receiving unrelated broadcasts everyday piking the affiliate offer du jour with the sole intent of separating them from more cash.

Imagine your next door neighbor bought your product or service - would he mind your emails?

This would solely be for broadcasts every so often about my services. There would be no affiliate links sent. It will be just to communicate special offers. There would most likely be no autoresponder sequence that they are added to.

That's a pretty common practice. As to whether people will like it- some
will, some won't. They can always opt out.

One thing to be careful with though, is Paypal. Though its perfectly legal and
all that, paypal had decided they don't want you doing it. If someone takes
exception, they can cause trouble if they complain to paypal.

Another way of doing it is to make buyers opt-in to your buyer's list, before
they are can get to the download page. But some won't like that- Six of one,
    half a dozen of another.

I wished my graphic guy added me to a list after purchase - I'd love to get emails from him with specials deals and what not

So I think it's a good idea and the CAN SPAM Act allows you to do this if they are purchasing something from you.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,
