How do you promote a very general site, for example, a news website?

How do you promote it? Too general to target any keyword. In my case, a news website.

Simple enough. Through other news websites' comment's section. Most use disqus so finding them is very easy.

I'd be suprised if you didn't traffic automagically from the search engines.

I've run simple news feeds on a site and you'll see the search engines crawling constantly because your content is constantly refreshing.

You're right. I receive some traffic from search engines but not enough and I search alternative ways to promote it.

You're getting too caught up in old school SEO... Find a keyword, target it on your home page, target sub-keywords on category pages, etc... None of that applies to a news site.

Instead you're looking to capitalize on those one-off keywords that only relate to maybe one or two stories, and only for a few days at a time. Simply write your titles and your content in such a way that includes some possible keywords for that story. Should be a good start.

And remember, ultimately your goal is to put your website in front of people who enjoy reading the news. SEO isn't the only way to do that.

You're absolutely right. But, to achieve the goal, I have to promote it.
      Any idea?

Whatever method you use - social media, spamming comments on other sites, etc. - don't promote the forest.

      Promote the trees.

I formerly owned a community newspaper and as an Editor in Chief, what is your news site's leaning? Even news sources have a certain polity or perspective which is what people cling on to. You need to resound some harmony with a target market.

This has more to do with becoming popular within certain groups of like-minded readers.

So to be simple - start an editorial category and begin to do your own slant on the news - check what's hot in Google searches (trending) and here is all the SEO you need to do for your site - and don't be afraid to be controversial (that will get massive traffic coming in).

I would definitely check out Outbrain - CPC's at $.15 or less (titles are EVERYTHING). Your news articles should very unique, intriguing, and clever titles to get your CTR high. The higher your CTR, the lower your CPC.

I've seen anywhere from .03 to .10 per click and this traffic is super high quality - these visitors are staying on my pages on average of about 3 minutes (some pages on my site do a lot better).

Outbrain is pretty slick. Check it out I think it will work very well with your news site.

I think the BEST way to go here is a site like Reddit, it has so many sub sections and it is always looking for good sources of information, for people who express their opinion and creates good content.

You can do what Arianna Huffington did and Just copy and paste articles from other sites, dropping the source link in the article.. Eventually you'll get enough traffic from people checking the site out wondering why their content is on your site..

Probably you don't understand what Arianna Huffington does.
        Copy/paste a news article, you're right, it isn't legal.
But, if you write, with your own words, a news article, it's legal. Even if, the same news appears for the first time in the other news website.

Actually it's TodayNews.info. The mentioned site it's the second one.
I understood the opinion from your post and you can avoid the site if you don't find it useful.
