More tumblr blogs than wordpress?

Tumblr brings a lot of traffic. It is a nice ecosystem and blogging platform. For WP, you have to drum up your own traffic.

Call me a skepchick, but how can anyone possibly know how many Wordpress websites there are around the world, anyway?

If I and all my friends and all their cousins and all their cousins' friends and all their cousins' friends' cousins and all their friends, too, put up 1,000 extra Wordpress blogs each over the next week, who's going to count those additional 100 Million Wordpress sites, and in whose figures are they going to be included, and how?

Presumably the figure refers to the free WP blogs on Wordpress blogging platform and NOT self hosted ones so WP would know how many active blogs they had on their platform just like Tumblr do.

If it is talking about wordpress.com, then it is not that hard to estimate. you google:

site:WordPress.com - Get a Free Blog Here

my result was: 364.000.000

For self hosted blogs... mmmm that is a bit more interesting. You could use "powered by wordpress" as keyword. Still not accurate, but it is something.

Result for this: 509.000.000

Yes, the number of sites hosted on one host is easily enough known, but he said "number of wordpress sites around the world".

yeah, that is more tricky... you can make an estimation with the second part of the answer:

but you are right, this is not a good estimate, as it retrieves all the pages, not the websites...

taking out the other number:

509-364= 145

so we have 145,000,000 pages out of wp.com that have the legend. We are closer, but still not there. With some stats about sizes of websites and distribution, we might be able get a better number.

The way they come up with these numbers usually is from web crawlers. They just let them loose to crawl pages and the bots report any of whatever they are looking for, in this case, wordpress sites.

Bots can detect wordpress sites very easily, FYI.

Well, I do think the blogging trend is shifting over from text to pictures. Facebook, pinterest, tumblr. Even technology makes sharing images far more fun and less time consuming than taking the time to pen down coherent thought.

Anything to feed shorter attention spans.
