  Organic search engine traffic is my preferred means of free traffic, as it is the highest converting form of free traffic on the Web. Guest posting on websites with regular traffic is a technique I also rate highly though.

Organic SEO is the best method I have found for natural free traffic to a web site. Article marketing used to be great, but with Google's latest updates it is not as effective. But, the majority of my sales come from email marketing, not natural web site visits. So most of my efforts are on list building, not traffic. Of course lots of free list building techniques will also be driving visits to your web site, where your splash page or optin are located.

Kind of partially agree with you, but if you have no traffic, you have no list... therefore making traffic the independent variable

Yes, but only if you provide information (content) that your target audience is looking for; obey the SE laws, but create content for the people you want to reach.

CraigsList, other classifieds, Yahoo Answers are all great sources of free easy traffic.

Calling SEO free traffic considering how much work and time goes into producing results is a bit ridiculous IMO.

I've look through this whole thread and see that the most effective free traffic methods have been completely overlooked and left out. I will explain some...

1. Mailing to your list. When I mail to my list I can often see results coming in just minutes after starting my email broadcast. It doesn't cost me a cent to send an email to my list.

2. My own affiliate program. I'm building my own affiliate army so they will promote my products and none of that promotion costs me one red cent. I only pay when a sale is made. But you can't really say that costs me because I'm making a profit. Much more profit than the traffic I can create by my self. My business plan has a very reachable goal of having more affiliates in my affiliate program than ClickBank.

3. Joint Ventures. By doing joint ventures you can leverage other peoples circle of influence to get almost immediate traffic to your project. This is people that you would have never been able to reach. I have a list of over 8,700 people who I've done joint ventures with.

4. Ad Swaps again leverage other peoples lists to drive traffic to your project. Again this is free traffic tactic that costs nothing and brings traffic very quickly. I used ad swaps to build my lists in the beginning.

5. Contests. I did a contest that added over 22,000 opt-in subscribers in 60 days.

6. Giveaways. They are not just for list building. I used a giveaway to launch one of my membership sites. Guess what my OTO was after they signed up for the giveaway... I received over 2,000 new paying members.

Mind you, these free traffic tactics bring in highly targeted traffic so conversions are usually higher.

I personally like to grow my own list of subscribers. When I am growing the list, I will use a mixture of paid and free methods to drive traffic to my website. Once I have mu own list of subscribers, I feel that this is the best form of free traffic as I will be able to control where the traffic will be going. This is the best quality free traffic

It depends how much time you want to spend... I saw several mentions of Facebook which is a good way to start. If you already have friends then you can invite them to your site or blog or wherever you are wanting to send traffic.

In the long run though, free traffic will cost you your time.

I've also had some good traffic using guest posting. You need to be consistent with it though by finding blogs to guest post on.

I would imagine if you could find 5 or 10 blog owners who would each accept 1 guest post per week from you then you could start driving some really good traffic. Test and track everything.

I agree with Bryan, free methods do exist like social media, forum posting and blog comments. They cost in time both your time and time taken for your site to gain traffic.

The paid traffic alternatives are therefore a viable short cut for many

Everything you do costs you time. But, it only take 5 to 15 minutes to write an email to send to my list. As a matter of fact, it takes me less time to create the email than the amount of time it take my autoresponder to complete the send to the entire list.

If you are not building a list with the traffic you are getting now, your going to have to keep chasing new leads all the time. Your list should be the foundation of your business.

My #1 Rule for doing business online is...

Everything I do must in some way build my list.

I try to work list building into everything or I have to think about what I'm about to do 3 or 4 times if I can't figure a way to build my list with it.

Building my list is my top priority.

This is what has worked for me:

Article marketing ( time consuming writing & research )
SEO ( till panda update)
Squidoo lenses ( lost their power)

This is what ROCKS now!

Videosites ( the new article marketing)
Guestposts ( hijack other peoples traffic in trade for contect)
Forums ( sharing great content)
Socialmedia ( I'm not doing it personally but I know it works!)

A few years back I used techniques to get traffic trough Google, and now I'm focussing
more on funneling traffic from high traffic websites.

Pinterest has doubled my traffic since late last year but it depends on the niche. Some lend themselves to pictures better than others.
