Subdomains or categories

I have an 8 year old website with a few hundred backlinks selling my own products.

I am preparing to go into two loosely related niches (related to the broad keyword). My question to the more experienced is, which is better:

Splitting off into two new subdomains, keeping the niche and keyword phrases more closely focused,

OR

Adding two new 2nd level categories to the existing website, gaining the established domain age, PR, and links. It also makes a larger and portentially more authoritative site.

Thanks

I would definitely opt for making a new category. With a new subdomain, the search engines treat this as a separate website. So you have to start all over again with link building & marketing. You would benefit much more by just expanding one domain. The entire website doesn't have to stick so closely to one exact niche. Think of how well wikipedia ranks while covering every niche under the sun. You just need sufficient links from relevant pages.
