Weird File On My Computer.... What is it??

Hey Gang,

I've just noticed a weird file within one of my mydocuments folder
named .skip_next_hg_backup

What's weird is I didn't create this file -- or download it. And it looks like it was created 5 days ago... the same time I started downloading my .sql DB backups.

Now, I've been downloading my .sql backup DB_files from hostgator phpmyadmin -- but I've been saving these files a couple of levels deeper than where this file is located.

And when I right-click on this file... and go to properties -- it says
it can open with: Windows Shell Common Dll

I called hostgator, ans they didn't know what this file was. Does anyone here know what this file is and/or how it was created? And if I should be worried?

    Run it thru www.virustotal.com to be sure.

    Originally I would have said it was part of your HG backup, but since they dont know what it is, I can't be so sure now.

    Windows don't create files or even temp files in document folder, so you don't have to be worried about it as a system file.

    Secondly, if you don't know this type of files and don't need them, just delete it, it could be a virus also.

      I also agree with you. It can be a virus so if you feel that this file is not necessary, you should delete it.

    Are you using Wordpress? If so, are you using any backup plugins that could have generated that file? Just going on the file name it does look as if it is a backup file generated on the Hostgator server by something - perhaps a plugin.
