How feasible is it to make money off a website like this?

As a complete newbie to this whole thing I would like you guys to advise on whether the site I am planning to create is a decent prospect money-wise.

The idea is this: a website that offers a comprehensive guide to a city for a specific ethnic student group. This particular ethnic group has thousands of students in my city and many more that are waiting in the wings to study in the city in the future. The website would give all kinds of advice on how to settle into life in the city.

Now obviously I don't expect the site to be raking in millions of dollars, but I would like your advice on how best to monetize it. Would it be best to have straight up google advertising banners or would some other form of monetization work better.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sell ad space to local businesses. Especially businesses that your target audience would most likely shop at.

Firstly do you know that there are enough searches for the information that you are going to provide?

Secondly, do you know how to drive traffic to it?

You would have to be get a decent amount of traffic to it for a local company to advertise on your site or to make significant money from adsense which I would think would be your best bet to begin with.

For what sounds like a tightly-niched local market, search volume may not be all that important.

This is the more important question. Can he reach the market in a cost-effective way?

The same businesses who might be interested in advertising might also be good sources of traffic, as would local student groups, the school(s) they attend, any ethnic clubs, school or group papers/newsletters, etc.

If the price is reasonable, a lot of businesses will take a flyer on a new advertising outlet 'just to see if it works', especially if it's something like a flat fee.

The only downside to selling local ads is the necessity to sell local ads.

My advice is to have several ways to advertise. Do not limit yourself to just one method.

I think adsense will be a good idea. Once it gets popular, you can sell ad space. I don't think affiliate marketing will work, there isn't much products for this market.
