How to choose a domain name

I have identified a keyphrase (consisting of two words) which I want to use in my domain name.

For argument's sake, let's say those two words are "check" and "mate", and I add the word "blog", then the domain will be : checkmateblog.com

Now, if a phrase match search in Google for "check mate blog" shows 161 competing pages, would it be worthwhile to register the domain name and create a site?

The actual two words (without the word "blog") returned 218,000 competing pages in a phrase match search. They also have about 40,000 searches (broad) for March 09.

Any advice for this novice would be greatly appreciated.

    Sudden,

It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish, of course. If you generate X amount of visitors a month as a result of choosing this domain and generating Y outcome, sure. But, you can only answer this.

Personally, I have multiple adsense sites earning X amount of dollars from Y amount of traffic. They all serve hyper focused search terms with very little competition.

And when you have fewer competition, your domain will rank quickly with Yahoo organic search results.

      Takuya,
Thanks for the reply. Since my post, there has been another thread "Keyword in Domain".
I believe that the replies in that thread will lead me to a good solution to my problem.

      Cheers,
