Social Bookmarking and 'pinging' - please explain for beginners!

I'm following a WSO [taking action!] which clearly sets out how to build backlinks to my blog and squidoo lens.

However, although this may seem ridiculously easy to those of you who have done this before, I look at the various sites and am really mystified. The social bookmarking sites are all set out very differently, so one approach doesn't fit all.

I have searched on this site and on the web to try and understand, and I can see why I am meant to build backlinks, but am still not sure what bookmarking actually means, and how to do it.

The same goes for 'pinging'.
Could someone please explain so that beginners like myself can follow the directions. I would be very grateful indeed for some instruction, as this is holding up my campaign!

About the pinging part... most of the bookmarking sites (and squidoo/hubpages/etc) will have an rss feed. Grab that link. Now there's two things you can do with it:

    1. Ping-o-Matic! - you can manually go there, paste in the feed, and ping your new content one by one. (this is fine if you're only running 1 or 2 accounts, but will become a huge hassle when you've got dozens of accounts)

    2. Update Pinging Services - King Ping Your Blog - paid service, but it'll automatically spider up to 30 of your web 2.0 properties & ping em when it sees new content. (much easier than option #1, much more effective)

So since you're new, I'd just use pingomatic for now. But if you get serious about it, look into King Ping.

You have both explained what I needed to know, and hopefully it will help others too.
    It is very much appreciated.

Pinging is completely different from book marking. I personally use Bookmark & Share - The Power of the Button | OnlyWire to bookmark all of my blog post and sites. All social bookmarking means is that if you found a site you liked. Instead of adding to your own bookmarks list you make it available for all browsing eyes to see the page as well.

I use Ping-o-Matic! PingMyBlog.com and Blog and ping | Pingoat All pinging does is it notifies the search engines that you have made changes to your page. This makes the spiders crawl that page sooner then your typical once a month crawl. So if you just made a post on your blog and you pinged it with the three above you can get your new post up in the search engines with in the hour.

So bottom line is bookmarking with social sites does build back links while pinging only makes the search engine spiders crawl your site sooner. Both are need to get ranked higher in the search engine since all search engines like new content which tends to get top spots. While social bookmarking builds your backlinks to help you maintain the top spot longer.

Hope that helps pal also forum posting builds backlinks so make sure your link is in your sig. You can also go around and comment on blogs in your niche to get good quality back links. Good luck to you

    Barlow Girl,
Good for you for taking action. And it looks like you got some very good answers from knowledgeable warriors. After you have done bookmarking and pinging by hand for a while, and have gone to see your links showing up, you will make the connections and see how bookmarking and pinging are benefiting your site. I use Bookmarking Demon, an automated bookmarking tool. Inside this tool is the ability to ping as well.

Further on in your IM career, you will probably take a look at automating these processes. I highly recommend that doing bookmarking and pinging by hand is valuable. Once you have a full understanding of how time-consuming, yet beneficial, these links are, automation is a natural progression.

Best of luck with your website and lens!
