Always check Your Numbers

I had an eye opening experience yesterday. I've been trying to scale up my Adsense money by making more YouTube videos for monetization. In the past year, I changed my niche from the Stock Market to Self Help / Personal Development. I've been uploading and promoting like crazy my inspirational videos for the past year and I started to notice an increase in my monthly revenue from Adsense (monetization).

I always made the assumption that it was due to the traffic techniques I was doing for those inspirational videos. I am a little obsessive and check my adsense account almost everyday. This weekend, however, I decided to check the analytics within my actual YouTube Channels. What did I find?

All the work I was putting into my inspirational videos was netting me an average of $1-2 per 30 days. I was confused. Eventually, I decided to login to my old YouTube channel and check the stats there. WOW, so the increase in revenue was from these videos. Keep in mind, I have not uploaded a new stock market video in over a year.

What Did I learn:
1. Always check your stats (numbers)
2. My goals was to upload a bunch of videos now (work hard now), so that in 10 years, I would just have this passive income from videos that I could use for whatever I need. This concept has proven to be TRUE. Once you upload a video (with good content), it's there forever to make you money forever.
3. GET MY BEHIND BACK INTO THE STOCK MARKET NICHE, lol. I am not going to stop my inspirational video production, but I definitely need to get back to 1st passion of teaching others to invest in the stock market. I just felt for a bit that it was such a competitive niche that I needed to diversify.

I'd be careful about #2. Google is always changing rules. Stuff that passes muster now might be penalized in the future. Instead, focus on quality videos that are CLASSICS (ie., withstands the test of time).

Seems like you would need 100,000 videos to accomplish this. To each his own, but I would diversify, especially since your youtube account my one day be snatched under your nose, never to return.

But do diversify - then, you'll definitely be on the right track.

Or quality standards might be strictly imposed. There are many youtube products out there that are just made of a picture and a soundtrack. 'Low quality' can't even begin to describe these mass videos. They are made only to target keywords. I am sure Google wouldn't look too kindly on Youtube being filled with low quality videos.

For sure a basic lesson for any marketer is to know
where your profit is coming from but I'm guilty about
not checking my traffic stats as well. Sometimes
when you take a look you are surprised where the
    sales are actually coming from.

    Good reminder.

I think expecting YouTube videos to bring in income 10 years from now is a bit optimistic. Lots will be changing in the next decade.
