How Can a Master Jedi Salesman Translate His Skills to an Online Business?

Hello,

I am new to the forum and super excited about asking LOTS of questions so that I can get started with an online business!

So here is my situation: I have spent the past 4 years as a face to face salesman for Tech, Furniture, and other types of various supplies. I became very good at it. But also I became burned out and tired of repeating the same exact pitches 50 times per day. So then I stumbled across this idea of Affiliate Marketing. It sounds awesome and everything, but with all of the information overload and the latest google slaps, it all caused me to freeze like a deer in headlights and take no action.

The main reasons for the inaction on my part is because I just have zero proof that all of this online money making stuff really works. Sure, it all sounds legitimate and feasible, but if you don't have any mentors or clear direction of where you are going then how can you get there?

I guess that I have managed to narrow down my biggest obstacles as:
  • Niche Selection
  • Monetization Model (Adsense, Amazon, Clickbank, etc...)
  • Authority Site or Mini Niche Site?
  • How to get enough Leads to make a reliable income without being ranked in Google top 10?
  • How to produce enough content as a one man show? I don't want to hire a whole army of writers. I just want to make enough to support myself and not have to worry about making millions to pay 20 writers.
  • Can you make enough money without having to build a list?
So basically, what do you guys recommend for someone like me who is a great salesman and can pretty much be successful at selling just about anything as long as I have time to research the product?

Should I stick with physical product reviews? Would Amazon sites be a good choice for me?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You,
Rebel MVP

Use the force young master. Put negative thoughts of inaction out of your mind. Reflect on your skill set of personal interaction, even if repetitive.

Why search for niches when you already have expertise in many?

What do you see young Jedi Master? Video. Showcasing your selling capabilities. Talking to a camera as if talking to a prospect. Or talking to a prospect and answering their questions on video.

Filmed once. Shown over and over. On topics you can already talk about for hours off the top of your head.

      This all sounds great!

But once again, do I start a site that is only about tablets? Or a site that is about all cool and popular new tech items?

Everyone keeps saying to niche it down and focus etc...but I feel like that limits my opportunities to make a sale.

If someone lands on my site, I don't really think I am helping them out by having 100 different reviews of 100 different tablets. People seem to just want to know which is the best and they will buy it.

Then I guess there isn't any need for salesman or reviews or your website.

Or, you can focus on the word "best" and provide reviews, analysis, and help so that a person will find the "best" tablet for them.

If there was one "best" tablet then only one would be sold on the market. That is why you review and compare 100 tablets so that someone visiting your site will decide which of the 100 is best for them.

I think we're gonna have to revoke your "Master Jedi Salesman" title.

Someone comes up to in the store and says, tablet X is $100 more than tablet Y. What makes it better? And your answer is: I don't know. I only know about tablet X and don't review table Y?

Why don't you look up Chris Guthrie. He is a Warrior who made six-figures from a website focused on netbooks. Very similar to tablets.

Thanks for all of the wonderful replies so far guys!

          Keep them coming!

As far as questioning my selling skills...this is what I meant.

In my store, we sell like 30 different kinds of one certain item. Throughout the years, after seeing what sells consistently and what customers seem to be happy with and which ones customers seem to return, I have come to learn that there are always going to be certain brands and styles of products that customers will prefer over others. I realized this because we sell 100 of one brand for every 5 of another.

Anyways, my whole point in bringing all of this up is that I am kinda wanting to keep the site small, as in number of pages, but LARGE in number of visitors.

Is that even possible these days?

The number one thing you will ever learn how to do online is build a list.

The second thing you will need is focus. You must decide what road you want to go down whether it's affiliate marketing, CPA, Amazon whatever. You need to pick one thing and really do it.

And even if it's Amazon you still build a list. Don't think so? What about a list of women shoe buyers that you can run Amazon shoe sales and specials at as they come up.

That's just an example, but trust me on this, build a list.

you should be able to find all of those answers here in the forum, just be careful not to get sucked in to the instant cash riches promises.

All of the obstacles you are having are fairly easy to overcome. Just use the search feature here in the forum, and you should be able to get a ton of free advice. Although it is good to invest in your education and there are some good resources here to get you started.

    welcome,

I too come from a sales background, I sold cell phones and door to door sales. the best thing about internet marketing is that it resembles door to door sales. only in print ( or in video)

since you are in sales you should know that the money is in the prospect list. so it is wise to build a list, even if you don't plan on selling to them it is steal smart to have a means of staying in touch.

I have been using solo ads to drive traffic to my list(s) I havn't used PPV or CPA or any other type of paid traffic. for my lists I drive traffic with solo ads, and for my website I drive traffic though twitter and forum posting.

producing content can be changeling at times, thats why if you want to build a long lasting business, then I recommend building your sites ( at least your first one at least) from something you know really well and you are passionate about, or else you run the risk of getting bored and once that happens you will loose all motivation to continue your work.

as far as a authority site vs micro niche, an authority site takes way longer and more effort to build. if you are looking to build a site now and start making some money sooner then later, I would go the micro niche route.

and to touch on income, test them all out then weed out the the ones that have the lowest ROI.

if you need someone to shot ideas off off hit me up with a PM

Hello and welcome to the forum. I myself am a salesman (Cars for like 15 years)

If you have not given up your day job as yet DO NOT!

It can take awhile to build a fulltime income online.

But do not do like I did in the beginning. You must build a list. It is like your "Book of Business" in the sales world.

With a good list you have a set of customers to market to everyday. Like never having to wait on an up.

Your sales experience will seriously help you. But don't go off half cocked.

    Good Luck

Is that even possible these days?
    It certainly is.

Here's my advice to you Mr. Jedi:

Above all, be decisive and take action as soon as possible. Be warned that it is VERY VERY easy to get sucked into the "learning phase" of Internet marketing. Building a knowledge base is fine and dandy, but you don't make money until you move forward. Many of the folks on this forum are stuck in that learning phase - take care that you don't become one of them.

Remember that you will have plenty of time in the future to experiment with new niches or new ways to monetize traffic. The important things for you to figure out right now are:

    1. What is my niche? Who am I selling to?
    2. Where am I getting my traffic?
    3. What am I going to do with that traffic?

Those three things are ultimately what you need to decide, so focus on finding answers to those questions, then get your rear in gear!

Now, it sounds like you've narrowed things down a little bit… You'd like to build a product review website. This makes sense if you have a sales background, as the type of marketing/salesmanship required will probably come very naturally to you. Fortunately, Amazon sites are also very beginner friendly and easy to automate. So, go ahead and lock that in place. Amazon affiliate site - Done.

    Next?

What niche or product are you going to sell? That will be for you to decide, but you can get some ideas by simply looking around your desk and seeing what pops out at you. Don't worry about keyword research… Simply head over to Amazon and see what's selling. Look for items that have a lot of positive product reviews and try to avoid the tech niche – it's way over-crowded imho.

From there, all that's left is research, writing, publishing and promotion. Obviously, it's a little difficult to cover all of this in one forum post, but hopefully you get the idea: figure out what you need to know to move forward, then be decisive.

Honestly, instead of durdling around the forum where you're going to get all kinds of different answers and opinions, I would recommend picking up a proven e-course about Amazon affiliate websites. A couple good ones would be Amazonian Profit Plan, and I know fellow warrior wolfmii has a course as well (although I can't find it now). In fact, if nothing else I'd recommend reading through wolfmii's posts and threads to get a feel for how a properly automated amazon site should operate.

Anyways, hope that helps. Again - Be decisive! Take action! Just do it! (swoosh)

    Online business or Internet Marketing?

In an online business, sell offline.

In IM, sell via video or become a copywriter.

If you, are truly a great offline salesman, then I do not see why you couldn't make money online. Use your offline talents to rake in the money online. There are tons of folks that want to use their online skills and make money with offline clients.

You should use your skills to:
1.Create products based on selling and higher conversions
2.Create Webinars based on selling and higher conversions

I'd take that route over affiliate marketing (no offense, to aff marketing/marketers)

PS- Go checkout, the offline section and you can see what, I am talking about...

Hang out with some Ewoks and their charm will make you feel better about yourself and put you in a positive mindset.

Then make sure to fall in love with a princess whom you don't realize is actually your sister.

But you know what, I think your skills could translate to copywriting. Good sales skills don't always translate as it's a bit different than the written word, but you may find yourself a step ahead of if you start writing sales pages. Something to think about.

You may find you do well on webinars, too, as you're not afraid to talk to people and sell them, that's essentially what you're doing on a webinar.

If you could get involved with others who want to put their products on webinars, you may have something.

Research what others are doing in the space and try it out for yourself.

A person who wants to become a software salesman needs persistence, familiarity with the computer software concepts that relate to various company products, and a persuasive personality. Expertise in or awareness of the way the software a company produces is used means that the salesman will be able to explain why a customer should purchase the products. Companies expect that if a person can present himself well and do a good job negotiating his own hiring, he will likely be able to translate those skills into strong product sales.
