WordPress update problem

Im experiencing a problem with WordPress. When I try to update the plugins, it comes up with a screen which shows the site homepage with a 404 Not found error embedded within WordPress instead of showing a list of plugins which have been updated. So I cannot update the plugins.

Im not using any plugins that im not using on other sites so I don't think a plugin is causing this. Anyone know what the cause of this problem could be.

The new wordpress versions are riddled with issues. I had problems with plugins, problems with the post and page editors, etc. I wrote hostgator and they went in and corrected the issues. They said that the newest wordpress versions are having compatibility issues.

Might want to start with contacting your host

The same thing also happened when I updated to WordPress 3.5.1, the screen of the homepage came up embedded within WP, but it did update it properly to 3.5.1, but when I try to update the plugins they won't update.

The problem is that when Wordpress updates unless all of your plugins, themes etc.. are compatible with the updates it can lead to problems.

I think, as long as you have backed up before hand you will be able to roll back to the previous version however.

The latest WordPress version caused my blog to crash and I never could put the pieces back together, I had to start from scratch. Perhaps others here could have done a better job of putting it back together, but the point for me is to stay away from WordPress updates as long as possible. I leaned never to update Windows unless I absolutely had to and now I see it applies to WordPress as well. And watch this forum for comments prior to updating so you don't get hit again. OK, good luck, Ed.

One of the key things to think about when updating WordPress (especially with 3.5) is to check the versions of PHP and other back end technology that your host is using. If you are on a shared server hosting account, you may just find that your host has not kept their systems as up to date as WordPress would like.

If you are on a virtual private server or a dedicated server (which most of you starting out won't be) then you have control over upgrading your dependent software. Talk to your ISP before you hit that upgrade button inside WordPress and back up very often!

Ultimately if your system is running well with the current version of WordPress and you want to stay where you are without being hassled to upgrade everytime you visit your dashboard there are plugins (free) that will disable the WP update nag box.

I have not update to the latest version because of all the compatibility problems that people keep talking about. There was a post in here a few days back showing how you could go back to a previous version of Wordpress but I never copied the information. Maybe someone could post that information here.

There is nothing "complicated" about going back - which never is a wise decision, btw.

Every normal webmaster has a backup copy of the database and of the WP files... before attempting to make any changes.
So, if an upgrade/modification/etc. goes wrong - you just revert to your backup (previous) version.

People are 'mystifying' these common sense things... that's the real problem.

And before upgrade, always make sure you checked the compatibility of your fancy plugins and themes. If the author of your plugins/themes are not involved with the WP community (but are rather IMers...) then you have a fat chance to get in troubles when the IM-freindly themes/plugins turn out to be non-WP-friendly
