A solo ad is when you pay someone else to send an email to there list for you. They charge you per click they send. For example you might pay $75 per 100 clicks to a solo ad provider. They will email there list (with your link) and will guarantee 100 clicks, and charge you $75 for this service.

Generally this is used to get people to your free product opt in so you can build a list of your own. Many solo ad providers will not send there list a mailing to anything but a free product offer.

A solo ad is when you buy "clicks" from a list owner's list. They may have a list of 1000 subscribers and you may offer .30 per click for them to send your message to their list. If you buy 100 clicks it will cost you $30.00. When they click on your link inside your message they then become subscribers to your list. I hope this helps.

A word of caution when paying for a "solo ad".

If you are going to integrate solo ads as part of your business then you must make sure that you have a complete marketing funnel that has a great deal of back end profit. Solo ads can generate a ton of cheap leads if you have a good front end, but most people fail when they don't have the follow up and backend to support the cost.

Build a solid funnel and make sure that the back end supports it.

Track your metrix.. And make sure you don't fall for the "Get 100,000 visitors for $5 deal....test test test test.

          Hope that helps.

... But - speaking as a newbie - shouldn't you establish a name/reputation (brand yourself) before creating a great marketing funnel with back end profits etc. and start sending solo ads? Or is the reputation - at this stage - in the products you're offering?

In short, you pay someone to email out your products or services...

Ok those were some great replies. I would suggest that you ask a few more questions before you get into purchasing one. They are my form of traffic and they can be extremely effective. They can also leave you wondering what happened.
Some questions I would ask of the vendor.
-Do you have a buyers list.
-How often do you mail to your list.
-Is mine the main offer or a floater on the bottom of the email.
-Did you build this list just to sell solos. If so what were the types of lists used to build your list. ( I don't care if I have a lot of questions.... You want my money and a good review)
There are a bunch more, but this will give you a very good start. Like I said I love solo's and there are some really good providers out there. I would only caution you to do you due diligence. Good luck and make some cash : )

make sure you don't rely fully on the claims the email list owner says to you though.

a lot of these email lists have been beaten to death so you may pay for pretty much no reason

Some great answers above plus my own take on it:

    1. Always track your results, lots of free tools out there bit.ly or Pretty Link Light for Wordpress will be good enough for start - and simple to use, this is important when you start at first!

    2. Test small - if a solo ad seller sells 50 clicks buy that first, if she/he sells 25 clicks even better. Only later after you are 100% sure this seller has good traffic buy more.

    3. If you can split test 2 solo ads, create 2 different copies. Difference can be huge, one copy may get you sales and 50% optins while other maybe 30% optins but no sales.

If you can invest it can be a great way to boost your subscribers. Good luck!

Be extremely careful buying solo ads, it can be a scam.

In example, I can create in 20 mins a bot that goes to your website opt in and confirm the mail, using public proxies you would think it is real but is not.

is better if someone recommends you where to buy them.
