I use wordpress more and more as time goes on...but I also just hand code HTML websites too. It really just depends on what you need it for.

It's a pretty simple platform...almost as simple as you can get. If you're having problems, well...I don't want to say that it's because you're doing something stupid..but...

I love Wordpress. Maybe you just need the right theme. Some themes are very difficult to work with and I avoid those. What kinds of things are you trying to do?

So true, especially those blog comments! Have sites with 1000s of pending comments from all the spam.

Security wise, understand the frustration of website getting hack (and losing ranks) It's all part of the field I guess...has it's pros and cons. (doesn't make it any more right though but no point brooding on it)

Although I read Sue's post about using wordfence and it really seems to do a good job in that.

Using WP Spam Free helps a lot to prevent those spam comments. Bad Behavior also does.

If you want to delete them all in seconds, go to phpMyadmin and click on the database and then click on SQL and run this command

DELETE FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = 0

Poof ... all gone.

You should enable the Akismet plugin and this will reduce spammed comments by 90%.

Just turn on Akismet spam blocker which comes with all WP installs. Then you won't have comment spam. It is very simple. Akismet does require a key from the Akismet site, and it is free. Once you have your key, you can use it on many sites, and it is wonderful, it works great and eliminates all comment spam.

In regards to hacking, there are many good security plugins which will nail down your WP very tight. In fact, there are plugins that - once you have it the way you want it - will not allow ANY changes from a hacker or anyone, the database is just locked up completely and that keeps things consistent.

You need to get your api key for akismet and activate it. it comes installed with wordpress by default and catches like 99% of spam comments. I have a wordpress site that gets over a quarter million UV monthly and I don't have any problems with spam.

I've been developing websites for 15 years and LOVE WordPress. Maybe you are getting sloppy themes or something. The platform itself is rock solid.

Could you be a little more specific with the type(s) of problems you're having with WordPress?

I've been developing websites for nearly 20 years. I've used various platforms and tools, but when I discovered WordPress about 4 years ago, I've never looked back.

WordPress is a free and true CMS or Content Management System. There are TONs of plugins paid and free to enhance the platform. You can do so much more and easier with WordPress than nearly anything else out there. I've put full blown sites together using WordPress in less than 30 minutes!

There are boatloads of free and paid courses on using WordPress and if you need a referral to training resources PM me and I'll be happy to give you some links, if you can't find any good ones on your own.

I think you need to invest in a premium wordpress theme. That way you will have loads of tutorials to work alongside. You will also have a dedicated community forum to ask all the questions you want. That is how I learned anyway.Do your research first though.

WordPress is a nice BLOGGING platform. It is quick and easy to install and use. WordPress is not and was never intended to be a replacement for real websites. It can be adapted to function LIKE A REAL WEBSITE but is still a blogging platform.

People on this forum tend to make comments as if the other CMS's out there like Joomla and Drupal don't exist or are not equally patronized.

That is partially true, but no other platform has the level of support and plugins like WordPress. Those other platforms are good, but don't really hold a candle to WP.

And if you think an HTML site with forms etc. is any better or easier, that's just pure nonsense. And I code ASP.NET websites with C# and VB,NET and I can tell you PHP and WP is MUCH easier.

I think most people are beyond thinking that WP is just for blogging. It has had full CMS functionality for several years now. It has enormous third party support.

In terms of actual use, nearly 50% of the sites on the Internet are CMS sites, and the breakdown is like this according to a recent study: WP is used by 17.4% of those sites, then Joomla at 2.7%. Others, like Drupal, Blogger, and all the rest (dozens of them) have smaller shares of the CMS market.

I have been building sites for 17 years, starting with HTML sites. Today, HTML sites have little to offer, especially since speed is less of an issue, and SEO is as good or better for CMS sites than HTML sites. Importantly, most clients want to update their own sites, and that's not easy for those with HTML sites.

I saw pure HTML sites were the wave of the past in early in 2005 and switched much of my work to Mambo, which became Joomla, as a fork, in August, 2005. I have built many hundreds of Joomla sites and still do a few these days.WP meets the needs of most businesses of all kinds these days, and I have built many hundreds of them too.

I considered Drupal very seriously, but never became a specialist and and glad I did not spend time with it--the third party community never jelled like it did for Joomla and WP. People wisely want WP and it is by far the best choice for businesses of all sizes and kinds.

I can understand and relate, We have gone from so many platforms on our main site that its not even funny lol.

But at the end of it all, google loves wordpress, most IMers love it so a ton of support and plugins.

My advise is learn ever part of it, a ton of video membership out there, find a good programmer or support guy that is cheap lol just in case lol

And balance your site out, We use HTML for our splash pages, phpfox for our community center and our main blog is still wordpress.

and yeah I hear ya, i have given up on it so many times and then when i try all the others, i find out WP is still the best, easiest and overall a winner for making money online

One other word of advise, drink more before you login lol

Thanks everyone for your expert replies to my question.
I suppose I was having a bad day when I put pen to paper(or fingers to keyboard)
The most frustrating problem with it at the moment is when I update a change, it doesn't show. I have to update a few times or log off of WP and go back to it after a few minutes for it to show the update.
I copied my site with backup creator then deleted the site and re-installed it. Still got the same problem.
One or two other small issues also.

I think I will carry on with it as most have commented, you won't get anything any easier or flexible.
Maybe I need to change the theme, I am using Flexibility 3 at the moment.

Just a quick note, it may be cache issue. If you are using a cache plugin like w3 total cache, or some other, your cache will still show the original page until it updates. This is a separate action from your page/post update button.

Or your browser itself may be keeping the previous page cached and looking at the temporary files to pull up your page instead of the new one that you just updated.

Just something to check. I love wordpress myself. I'd stick with it.

Maybe that is slowing it down.

That's probably it. I had a client with the same problem. Look in the Advanced Options Section and check the box that says "Don't cache pages for known users". That should help you see the changes. I think there is a also a box that will automatically reset the cache when you create a new post or page.

You might try a different browser as well.

Regardless of platform (Joomla or WP...) or theme, it sounds like you need some coder to smooth out the issues so you can get on with business. (without drinking heavily.)

Just like all other software, WordPress will sometimes suffer from bugs. However a good reason for using and sticking with WordPress is the massive amount of (free) support available.
Whenever there is a problem, you can usually find the solution online or someone on a forum would be happy to help. Even in this thread a couple of posters have offered solutions.

Btw regarding the problem, sometimes a plugin might be the cause. You can try disabling the plugins and then through a process of elimination figure which one is causing the problem.

I've also gone through my plugins that seem to have multiplied and deleted a load of them that I don't think I require.

Man I love wordpress! I would suck at internet marketing if I didn't have Wordpress... LOL.. Really!

and it sounds like something simple. What I do when I'm having a problem that seems to be coding...

I hit up Fiverr, find someone with a lot of good feedback in "fixing any wordpress problem" and tell them what's going on. 9 times out of 10, they can fix it and do so in 24 hours..

I just heard that almost 17% of all web sites are using WP. That is almost 1 in every 5. BUT, there are plenty of alternatives. It just depends on what type of person you are and the type of site you want.

If you want something simple like a blog layout, go for a basic drupal or joomla template. They are not as user friendly as WP, but hey, everything has a learning curve, right? These are a bit more difficult to use, but if you are the programming type, then you may prefer drupal, as it gives you more professional look. Joomla too. If you like images and media displays, check out concrete5. If your hosting provider uses softaculous as the auto installer, then that should have like 200 different applications like that.

They have a beta version now that you can try that should be coming out in a few months....

If handled well with the right theme Wordpress is the easiest CMS that you can use. In case of any issues find out the cause and take corrective action. If not changeover to Joomla or Drupal but you may find them difficult too.

WordPress is a great tool, and I don't think the downtime is really connected with it. It's more probably your hosting problem. As to security, WordPress is as secure as you make it. Surely, if a hacker finds a flaw in WP code, he's got a much wider range of sites at hand than in the case of any other CMS.

Jenki1 - either clear the WP SuperCache everytime you make/change a post, or disable all together while you are making changes. Once things are set, turn it back on. Guaranteed thats your problem.

I do have my issues with Wordpress at times! When It gets too complicated, I outsource the thing because it's totally counter-productive! I am a technophobiac! But, I have to admit that It's become easier with time! I still get really fed up with the "updates' and there are a couple of things I need to sort out ASAP too! Oh, and the worst....RSS FEED! I just don't get it! I'll have to get someone to help me out for this! No, you're not alone! At least, I am here with you!

See if someone can help you and move onto something else, something more productive! These things can seriously ruin your days! Or even prevent you from even getting started! It has happened to me!
