Internet marketing at 40!

Should all marketers start their businesses before 40? Or is it true that the life of an Internet marketer begins at 40? If he begins to implement all the innovative ideas of IM he has learned between 30 and 40 then he should see no difficulty in selling products and services at 40! Any other views?

Unless you have those years in Experience, I would have to say that any age is a good age to start marketing... Knowledge is Power.. Research the Products and do the best you can to market it...

I thought the saying was "life begins at 40"? :p

I think if you're going to start your business, you need to start it as soon as you can. Look at the number of people who started in their late teens and 20s and are doing well now in their late 20s and early 30s. If they'd waited another 10-15 years, who knows where they would end up?

The problem with innovative ideas is if you wait to long implement them, they may no longer work. And even if you implement them, there's no guarantee they're going to work at all if your approach is off.

I think a person at 40 might have an edge in some areas over a person at 20. What areas those are, I can't say, but the additional 20 years of life experience could very well lend itself to more experience in certain areas.

I think you should start your business as soon as you can after deciding to do it, whether you're 20, 40, or 60. Age doesn't matter as much in this business.

As someone who is 40 but has been selling my own products online since 1997, I have to say, the Internet changes so fast, the only things that stay with you long-term are the relationships you make with people and your reputation.

You can start an online business at any age and succeed because there are always new opportunities and new niches, but have an eye on your relationships and reputation if you want to succeed long-term.

I don't think age means much, it's all about experience & execution. I would take a person at 50 with 10 years of experience than a person at 30 with only 5 years.

Do it when you have the capability do. It doesn't comes with age. Although in "Your magic power to be rich", Napolean Hill did talk about a statistic done which prove that most man will only get rich after 40. Where he goes round to talk about desire and sex transmuation, and I do agree with his point.

I don't think age has anything to do with success in business. It's motivation, a burning desire, not giving up.

The reality is that when we're younger we probably don't have as much motivation for it, as we're out doing other things that at the time seem more important.

Why should age be a barrier to selling things? Be it on the internet, or door to door. There's a few technological hurdles. But if you can make something, and you can sell something, you will succeed. That's all internet marketing is.

This is absolutely true. I did door-to-door sales for a local company to make some money when I was a student (20+ years ago now - where does the time go!?). One of the guys on the team was in his 80s, working a few days every week because he was bored at home. He was the most amazing salesman I've ever seen - he couldn't walk nearly as fast as the rest of us, but in terms of sales he was streets ahead!

So no, I don't think age is a barrier to anything, young or old, unless there is some actual, physical, practical or legal impediment that prevents you from achieving your aims.

Age is a state of mind. I began my online work because my health got too bad to cope with a traditional job after being unlawfully terminated from my last J.O.B.
I have my writing and proofreading skills. At the end of this year I turn 50 but it is no big deal. I have this work to keep me busy until I can't do it anymore.

I think only drawback with age is that you have more responsibilities, so you have to manage yourself and your time very well to find time to focus on your business.

In fact, if you know how to focus, you do not need much time to work on your business.

It is not the age, it is the business knowledge (a combination of education and experience) that counts. With better knowledge, you can run things really fast.

I think it's because I'm a "southern boy" so I talk kinda slow and it's easier for folks of all ages to follow along and understand...

So, I don't think there is an "age limit" only a "knowledge limit" - if they can do basic stuff on a computer then they can learn IM at any age.

I was not able to start IM before 40 because there was not Internet at that time.

However, now it helps me a lot to have over 40 years experience with computers dating back to the days when a program instruction looked somehow like:

      1001 1000 1100 1110

and there was neither mouse nor monitor.

So no problems with IM at over 60.

I am more disciplined than I was back then, I have a greater sense of purpose, and a life that means more. I have stronger principles, and I have recognized the value of taking action for action's sake without an overwhelming need for certainty. I have confidence that I didn't have then.

There are a million reasons that 40 can be a great age to get involved in IM, or anything else for that matter.

It is not the question of beginning IM at 40; it is all about getting accustomed to the practices of IM before 40 and plunge at 40, anything wrong with the assumption?

To me once you reach that age and assuming you did a good job of managing your finances, you should have a decent size nest egg saved up by that point and should not have to rely on IM as a source of income. When you reach that age I feel you should be looking to invest a nice portion of your savings in solid and steady investments with almost immediate returns such as bonds, as IM is alot riskier IMO espcially for older persons. Even if you don't have a nest egg saved up working offline would still be a better alternative than IM because it is guaranteed income which is needed even more as you get older.

Unless you are an established successful online marketer by that age of course, then the above statement need not apply.

But age really doesn't mean much, I know people in their early 20's who have the maturity and discipline of most people in their 50's, and I know people in their 50's who think and act like 10-year-olds.

30's...with some experience (life's) behind you, you start looking a
little more closer at the yrs ahead...

Into the 50's and 60's...you've begun getting a handle on a few things...

70's...80's...90's...these are the yrs that you're aware of all past, present and future...

IMO, start asap if you are really committed.

This is very time-consuming in terms of learning curve. We learn who's who and which is which and what is what soon enough. But you'll never know unless you start doing.

Much better is to find some insider that you can trust and lead you to the right direction.

I mean, I'm just new and I'm thankful I have seen a lot already. HAHA

As with anything it's up to the individual to find his way through the BS.

I'm like "I have all these courses but I can't study them ALL AT ONCE. Let me try what I know now and see what works and build from there."

Doesn't matter what age, race, sex or religion you are, there's room for everybody and I know of many people in their 60's, 70's and beyond who are making great livings online.

Reading this thread it's inspiring to see that not only is it true that people are starting successful IM businesses at 40, technically middle age, or mid career age, but also after retirement, and even at the very start of their career.

The underlying message here seems to be that it's only you that could limit yourself into believing your age could be a factor. If you believe that it is not, then in is not.

I will be 67 in March, many people half that age have a hard time doing things I do. If you want to call me an old billy goat then go ahead.

You are never to lod to learn new things.. Even stuff you said you would never do, this is the best part of been older and wiser.

Now if YOU want to stop learning at 40 you may. You will not advance in life much that way.

Never Stop Learning!! Education is something you need every day of your LIFE.

Now stop learning and be a polictian or a government employee. Then age 40 is correct. Nothing against the government people, as there are some smart ones out there.

Well now I wrote this I have to go and have 2 hour nap. LOLOLOLOLO

That's the great thing about IM. Anyone, at any age can do it. Just teach yourself the essentials through YouTube videos and WSO and other IM stuff and take a little bit from each course and give it your own twist.

I am definitely focusing on my Rep management biz as I feel better when I am actually helping the people that are paying me as opposed to trying to sell some scammy get rich quick crap on a IM review site. Which I have done.

I feel better about my offline biz though. It's more rewarding, you just have to actually talk to people, which is what I enjoy.

Why would an age matter? I don't get why you would ask that question? Doesn't matter if your 18, 40, or 90...age has nothing to do with it.

    Hi prasanth5,

I don't think it matters what age you start an Internet Marketing business as long as your apply yourself diligently.
Younger people have the belief that they can do anything and hence are not afraid to try new things.
Older people have the benefit of previous experiences and this may make them better at longer term strategies which may require more patience but I dont this precludes people under 40.

Remember how much experience you have just depends on when you started not how old you are, you can have concert pianists at 20 because they started when they were 10.

I started my online business at the age of 40 even with no idea at all functions of the computer keyboard. :p
And two years later I was able to make money online here.

Age is not a barrier if you are serious about learning a lot from other people's successes were even younger than you.
Internet is changing very fast and you do not need to have super skills to be successful.
The important thing is to learn a lot according to your interests and practice it immediately!

Age is pretty much irrelevant. What matters is how excited you get at the thought of making money. If you get yourself all jazzed up about it, you will find a way to figure it out. My motivation has gone up and down in the few years I've been in IM, and the amount of work I get done and money I make has always been directly proportionate to how excited I was to see the results.

It's just a number. Some of us achieve a little more maturity a little later in life. This business takes a certain amount of discipline and often that comes with age.

40 is actually when a lot of people branch out into a new business if they are going to do it. It's a little less stressful because there is some money in the bank, but also, the we notice the clock ticking and the 'time is now' mentality often kicks in.

That's where I'm at, so prasanth5 my friend, you are in good company!

I have never heard about this before in regards to IM, but if you were to study all companies they would be peaking with those directors and business men who were in their 30+ and this is all down to their experience and working their way up and gaining the knowledge from experience.

I have been working with SEO and internet marketing now for around 6/7 years now and I'm 24, I don't want to wait till i'm in my 40's to hit my peak and have my best ideas!

Kind of surprised nobody brought this up...though a couple of people hinted at it.
There is a Huge demographic of 40-55 age range in US that are now unemployed or making less than they have in over a decade.
Many of them deciding it's a great time for a career/life change.
I'm certain many like me= 44 and have marketed various products and services online and off for many years.
Hated the corporate world anyway and could not keep up with my debts even with my job.
Why scratch and claw to join that world again, if you are going to struggle anyway you may as well do it working for yourself.
Business opportunities always do well in bad economies.
Also, as stated by a few others, my purpose in life has a hell of a lot more clarity now than even 3 or 4 years ago.
Not to mention my discipline and focus and years of experience that I can now use in innovative ways adding creativity and extra profit opportunities to everything that I do.
By the way...even at 44 I often have more energy and enthusiasm than people half my age, and still -often like a puppy...all energy and no direction :p

The great thing about Internet marketing, is there is no stigma with age. As long as you have a healthy mind, and are willing to adapt and move with the times I see no reason why you couldn't be doing IM at 100.

Unlike many real life jobs, there is always that stigma surrounding age, your'e either to old and past it, or too young and irresponsible.

It depends on your experience of business offline, online, if you have sales or marketing, how you embrace new technology, etc

I was giving advice to an asssociate on his offline business that uses Internet Marketing:

    www.shirotora.co.uk

an entirely real world business, yet clients and customers search for this service using the Net, so buy nature he has to use internet MARKETING although he does no internet sales

Also he needs to target and make the marketing regional - having a .co.uk rather than .com helps.

I'm a little late replying on this post, but I thought I should let you know. I'm 20 and I taught a 52 year old man how to use a computer 1 year and about 2 months ago ( yes how to use a computer ) Surf the web email etc, Now a year later he is running a very successful eBay business 200k a year gross. He creates his own listing finds his own pictures edits picture etc. He can do it all.

I think it's a combination of how bad you want to learn and if you have someone teaching you with patience. Trust me it took A LOT of patience for me haha. Dealing with questions like "How do you open up the internet?" Haha

Anyways I think you can learn how to do internet marketing at any age. Actually the man I taught, taught me a lot too because he had been involved in offline business for 30yrs and could apply the same principles to eBay.

There are many who start, do it for a couple of months and quit when they haven't made a million bucks. That is because of all the hype out there. Expectations are set too high and the failure rate is high. I started at 51 and 19 years later I am still going strong!!!

Internet marketing is something similar to a 'fine art' and hence you should be creative to succeed at the highest level. Not all marketers have talent and therefore 40 could be the safe age not to start but to flower as an IM!
