...it take you to build a successful niche related site/blog? (I don't mean a few pages thrown up with an affiliate review page)

I mean a blog that is popular in your niche....if you are in the niche, then you could mention the blog and people would know about it. This is where I would like to be in my niche and I think it is possible.

I am pretty new to IMing, started my first and only blog almost exactly two years ago. At this point I have about 500 subscribers, only a portion of those are really active, made about $1,200 the first year and $1,400 the second year (could have been better if I would not have neglected the site for months ), have written about 90 post (most of which are decent quality/all directly related to the niche)

I have a lot of faith that I could build this site into an "authority" type blog, but don't really know where to go next and how long it should take to make this happen? Should I already be there by now... if it was ever going to happen???

The blog is in the sig if you would like to see it before giving advice (not related to IMing NOT trying to sell you anything). If you have a popular, well known blog in your niche, any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

*I was playing around with the sites header and background, so this is not the typical look it has....more wondering about the bones of the site and the methods being used / not the look.

Thanks for anyone who wants to help!

yea it looks like you're in a good niche but you have your blog on an .info domain. I'm almost certain Google doesn't even rank those domains because I've never seen one in the results.

You should look into getting someone to switch your site over to a .com

...that's if you want free organic traffic.

It's a really good subject because it's REAL. It touches on human emotion. I get the feeling if you would have had a .com, you profits would have been much more than a thousand or so bucks...

I'm sorry, but that's just flat out wrong. I've owned literally thousands of .info domains that have received litterally millions of organic visitors from Google...

The reasons you don't see many in the results, Dennis, are ...

      (i) There aren't nearly as many of them issued/listed

(ii) People often don't use them for sites they want to rank, because they mistakenly believe that they don't rank as well as .coms.

(iii) Many marketers project their own prejudices onto their visitors and subscribers and don't realize that typical customers strongly prefer ".info" to ".com" and attach greater credibility to them and say so openly, whenever asked: they commonly see ".info" as an "informational" site, whereas ".com", to them, simply means "another marketer trying to sell me something".

In other words, the whole thing is a self-fulfilling mistaken belief.

It's not evidence of "how well they rank". It's just evidence of "how well people think they rank". You're looking at belief, rather than at reality.

The reality is very different: among the international top-level domains, the precise domain extension doesn't affect Google rankings/SEO at all. This is simply factual, and there are literally hundreds of posts/thread here clarifying, proving and explaining it (and plenty on Google's own blogs/sites, too - they explain it openly with every chance they get to dispel these myths about SEO!).

The links in these posts contain more information ... (and some of them contain lists of Google search terms, quite competitive ones, for which the top-ranked sites are on .info domains )

Depends on the niche; how much competition. Some sites took off in only a week. Other sites took months to attract visitors. I'd say, my normal sites, takes 2-3 weeks to start bringing in decent traffic. Although we might be a bit quicker as we have a very large network of people that we send out Emails to, and we are able to garner a lot of attention for new websites.

I'm not sure about bones vs. look but this is my opinion - and take that for what it's worth - an opinion. You must test for yourself in your niche.

You need pages that rank in the SERPs for keywords that you can compete for. That means finding long-tail keyword phrases that get a decent amount of traffic (total # for all pages over 2000) that you can compete for the 1st page of Google.

Do you have a social network presence? This is great content for social sites like Twitter and FB.

Backlink your pages to get them ranked so people find your site. Use your posts to support your pages.

Add an optin box right to the site so people can click there and not have to click the image of the book to find the optin area.

Take out the Meta links - but that might be what you're playing with now.

There are banner ads on the site for women related products but not related to infertility - I'm sure you could find some banners to other products or services?

This would really lend itself to press releases also - for strong backlinks.

You could find good news stories on which you can comment or medical research on infertility - being sure that you are also targeting the keywords that are bringing you readers.

Google Analytics will help with determining how people are already finding your site and you can build on that traffic as well.

    Hope that helps!

I feel that I have a few good long-tailed keywords that are ranking on the first page or two....but I agree that I definitly need more of them ranking!

I do use google analytics....right now I am getting around 200 views a day, at one point I got up to 800 but that only lasted about a month. I have neglected the site for four or five months until a couple weeks ago (hard to get much done with a new job, a new baby and a 2 year old!). The traffic starting falling off as soon as I stopped working on it. I do try to find stories to post on. But honestly I don't quite understand the whole "press release" thing.

Thanks again for all your great advice!

You should definitely use Facebook to promote your blog. You would use the same account you have for personal use, but the Fan Page you create will be its own seperate entity. Add some content to the fan page and then as you said you would have links going back to your own site.

Have you done any guest blogging? If you're stuck on ideas on how to get more readers, then trying to identify other related blogs would be a good strategy.
With the authority you have built up so far with your blog, I'm sure convincing other blog owners for a guest post won't be too difficult.

I know it is... I have high expectations! I know I am no where close at this point, but I feel like it has the potential eventually.

Wow, I am pretty jealous of all the folks saying it only took a few months. My questions to y'all are .... is this your full time job or do you also have a full time job??? Were you able to do this when you were new to marketing or only once you were experienced??

I have not paid for sources of info, and I was horrible with anything involving the computer until I started researching and teaching myself about IMing. In fact, I had never even heard of IMing until about a month before starting my blog. Although I feel like I have learned a lot I know there is sooo much more I could be doing. Just kind of feel like I am at a stand still. Thanks again!

    Hello

The "Bones" of your site look good. But, you really need to look at the background and whatnot. I would get a good theme, Post at least once a week, reduce amount of flashy banners and advertising, Write a free report to be a give-away for your email subscribtion. as well as a bit of social media marketing.

Your background makes me want to leave almost immediately.

Can't really pinpoint how long it took me because I started with building a website for my offline business at the time. That site took 6 to 8 months to generate new business. That's when I stumbled onto IM. Even after experience building a local business site that was successful, it took me about 2 years to go entirely online. I worked about 3 hours a day and weekends in the beginning on my online biz.

I started making good money when I focused on 2 sites only and striving to make them really good.

You're in a great niche. You should no doubt be able to earn far more money than you are. Learning how to monetize is part of the process and it took me a long time, despite having consistent traffic. For example, my first affiliate marketing site was a passion project that took me 18 months to figure out how to monetize despite plenty of targeted traffic. I didn't want to alienate my audience so I had to tread carefully. I'm glad I did. Now it does very well.

Suggestions for you (what I would do):

Branch out from only success stories to informative articles about IVF. There's probably tons of research you could use to help people. This will likely result in more traffic. I love the success story angle and use them on 1 of my sites, but I believe people want to read other information.

See if you can enter into a private referral arrangement with any private IVF clinics that you believe are very good. This takes some effort, but I believe given the high cost of IVF there are potentially some very good commission potential. I suspect people are more interested in concrete referral to a clinic than a digital product ... I would be.

I'd communicate your free IVF guide differently. You'll have to test variations, but try saying something like "Discover the 5 Most Important Steps I Took that Made IVF Work for Me (or Us)" or "IVF Didn't Work for Me Until I Did These 5 Things" or phrase it in the negative "Discover 3 things You Should Avoid for Successful IVF" or if you have suggestions for inexpensive IVF options that work, offer that as a freebie (this would be good given IVF is frightfully expensive).

Once you have plenty of new subscribers, you could easily start a baby/parenting blog and get your IVF subscribers to move to that email subscription ... be sure to wait a while and this is tricky if IVF doesn't work for all subscribers. The parenting industry offers all kinds of affiliate opportunities. I know because my wife and I had a baby a year ago and we've spent thousands of dollars and hours researching many purchases. If your IVF readers like and trust you, you can do well in the parenting space because of your existing audience.

    Good luck.

I agree....I should be doing better especially with the first hand experience that I have. I also agree with the "treading carefully". I feel like I am walking a fine line with the viewers to be able to promote to them without losing their respect. I want them to know that I care, not just out to make a quick buck.

I started the site thinking it would mainly be "success stories", but MOST of what I post is actually not success stories, but just IVF info and first hand experience with IVF itself. I have found it hard to find people that are actually willing to take the time out to share.

Could you explain a bit more about this.....sounds like a great idea. How does it work? Do clinics actually do this sort of thing???? I would love to refer people to the clinic that I went to, but that seems pretty limiting because they would have to be in the area to be interested.

I have not really known how to promote the guide....it really just has a lot of general info about IVF, some first hand experiences, etc. (Really good for a beginner, but will not help them to be successful, just will help them get through the emotional rollercoaster that IVF is! I agree that what you are saying would be more enticing, but it would not really be honest to them subscriber.....also, that is the angle that the ebook I promote takes (save money, improve chances...) Any suggestions on how to promote it without having to re-write it or lie???

Once again....great suggestion! This is something I have thought about a lot. I know there are soooo many products that can be promoted in this niche, but I have to say it seems extremely competitive and I am pretty much a beginner. I think I would be able to get some of my exsisting viewers to follow to a new blog, but think it would be hard to find new viewers in the whole "parenting blog" world. Congrats on the baby!!

Thanks for your thoughtful response, you have given me some things to really think about!
